Burma is the only country in the world for which the international trade union movement calls for disinvestment.
"Burma Day 2005" is a missed opportunity to look at how humanitarian aid could be delivered and used to strengthen civil society in the country, and seems instead to be aimed at removing much-needed pressure on the Burmese junta.
Stressing their commitment to supporting genuine humanitarian work in Burma, the union bodies are calling upon the European Commission to revise the p ogramme for "Burma Day 2005", and to "ensure that biased events of this kind are not allowed to happen again".

The recent decision by PepsiCo to cut all ties to Burma by May 31, 1997, is a significant achievement for Burma's democracy movement.
On February 20,1992, the Burma Rights Movement for Action (now known as Burma Issues) produced an English-language flyer in support of the boycott, and it wrote to various supporters of Burmese democracy in Asia and the West about the importance of the boycott.
Although shareholder resolutions on Burma were not as successful as they might have been, they did serve to raise awareness of the issue in the business community, generating much wider press coverage.
