It was Leeds dignitary James Kitson who commissioned the impressive hand-painted Burmantofts "faience" tile bathroom for Gledhow Hall in 1885.
Burmantofts faience glazes were all lead based and allowed for a range of colours.
Burmantofts employed a variety of potters who came from other potteries to work at the factory.

Burmantofts Pottery, as it is usually known, was only actually called Burmantofts for a very short period of the ninety-nine year that the company was producing ceramics.
Originally established by William Wilcock and John Lassey, it was set up in the Burmantofts district of Leeds, Yorkshire in 1845.
Early Burmantofts pottery was quite plain; typically bulbous vases, often with long slender necks.

Previously called Wilcock and Co, it was established in 1842 and by the 1880s was manufacturing pottery, tiles, orange or buff-coloured architectural terracotta, and large ceramic plaques.
It became The Leeds Fireclay Company after merging with other companies around 1900, continuing to use Burmantofts as a trademark.

 The Centurion Bar in Newcastle Central Railway Station.
It is decorated from floor to high ceiling in Burmantofts Baroque style top-lit by a tile clad skylight, with columns dominating both ends of the room.
Burmantofts, of Leeds, was the best known producer of tiles and architectural ceramics until the firm closed down in the late 1950's.
Another great example of Burmantofts tiles in Newcastle is the Central Arcade.

 THE DIRECTORY OF ARCHITECTURAL CERAMICS  IN WOLVERHAMPTON
Julie Gillam Wood, who is researching Burmantofts architectural ceramics, has found that Burmantofts supplied ceramics to "Shaw's premises Wolverhampton" in about 1890.
She says that the tiles here appear to be by Burmantofts and that the column treatment is very similar to that produced by Burmantofts for the Refuge Assurance Company's headquarters in Whitworth Street, Manchester, in 1895.
The architect of this building is unknown but, whilst stylistically it is not out of the question, it seems that this building is too small, too plain and too provincial for him.

It is decorated almost from floor to ceiling with faience from Burmantofts of Leeds; the main colours are browns, yellows and greens, with columns of circular and square cross section near either end of the room.
Its ground floor facade is decorated with green and yellow faience in a floral pattern with bees and beehives hidden in the leaves - definitely a design created especially for this particular pub.
The two-storey shopping arcade was faced entirely in Burmantofts faience in shades of brown and yellow, clearly marked with the date of completion, 1906.

Leeds’ Labour controlled Council is extending its wheelie bin scheme to a huge number of houses in the Burmantofts area.
The new bins have a greater capacity, which will mean the end of bags of rubbish strewn over pavements and in yards and gardens.
These wheelie bins are better than the old dustbins as they take a lot more rubbish and are far easier to use for both residents and bin workers.

 CCTV Boost For East Leeds (Leeds Liberal Democrats)
Local Lib Dem Councillors have welcomed the installation of 14 crime busting CCTV camera's in the Cross Green, East End Park and Burmantofts areas of East Leeds.
Ward Cllrs David Hollingsworth, Ralph Pryke and Richard Brett along with Leeds Community Safety Officers listened to the concerns of local residents and decided to push ahead with the scheme.
