The Frames : Burn the Maps - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
The same applies to the Frames' music, which on Maps swings from the barbed, railing guitar rage of the Pixies nod "Underglass" to songs where a whispering, almost self-conscious Hansard stands next to roaring chorus set pieces that bring the band's full complement of guitars and sweeping fiddle to the table.
It's also a bridge to Burn the Maps' final portion, three lengthy tracks that essay the Dirty Three's epic sway, build from aching acoustic guitar into a sort of comforting love song ("Wake up/It's your love calling," goes "Suffer in Silence"), and drift away on swirling fiddle and tinkling piano.
Burn the Maps is an elemental journey that tugs at the heart and sticks around in the mind -- just as the Frames have been doing for years.

Burn The Maps is a work of supreme beauty, sullen and quiet at times, gloriously orchestrated at others.

musikkguiden groove.no - anmeldelse: The Frames - Burn the Maps (2005)

Splendid Magazine reviews The Frames: Burn the Maps
Blending the intimate emotional impact of 2000's For the Birds (the group's last studio album) with the noisy, passionate tunefulness of 1999's Dance the Devil, Burn the Maps is a fifty-seven minute jump-start for the spirit.
Unabashedly mellow and reflective, Burn the Maps may not hook mainstream music fans who've been conditioned to expect a tidily rhyming chorus ever thirty seconds -- but U2, in their day, were no more accessible.
Comparing the two Irish acts seems lazy and amateurish, but there's a definite similarity; both bands created an emotional and intellectual connection with their listeners, and both cater to the "smarter" end of the mainstream audience without specifically excluding their less erudite fans.

Of course, for the Frames, all these myriad changes are their normalcy; the band has garnered as much critical notoriety over the years for changing line-ups and record labels as it has for its suffocating sound.
On Burn the Maps, an album for album lovers if there ever was one, the sort of record which lacking a single inclusion or pumped past the breaking point with one more aching moment, would never hold under the strain, he’s concentrated his angst and jagged pain into a statement that refuses solace.

The Frames zijn, hoe kan het bijna anders in een land met zo’n pubtraditie, een groep die vooral gemaakt is om op een podium te staan.

If the maps are on fire, it's a slow burn, one ignited after a succession of faulty matches had been struck, broken, and dropped.
They're formally and technically far ahead of Coldplay (to use an obvious reference point), but they're neither as affecting as Elbow nor as flexible as Clearlake, two bands that, like the Frames, haven't gained the name recognition in the States that they deserve.
They've clearly got talent, but, at least on Burn the Maps, they play it too safe, even if they come off as vulnerable.

The comparison is apt, but frontman Glen Hansard doesn't have a Bono-style superhuman rock voice; he has the voice of a normal person and he knows it.
The tension between the intimate scale of his voice and the epic tendencies of the band make Burn the Maps an intriguing record, with moments of high drama — the hook of "Finally," for example, is as big as all the world, and Hansard's palpable straining to make it so increases its punch.
But not all is stadium-sized bombast and melody-on-sleeve romanticism with the Frames: just as often, they sound like the broken-voiced, angst-ridden progeny of Radiohead, still just as full of drama and fireworks, but all turned inward, an internal combustion of despair.

Constantly compared to Radiohead and Coldplay, Dublin's Frames have got to be feeling a bit like the overlooked middle child when it comes to their fans in North America.
Notwithstanding the compliment that after 15 years at it they sound like two of the best from the U.K. Their fifth studio album, Burn the Maps isn't likely to change the shadows that have been cast in the past.
With so much variety in song structures and a wide range of complex tones it will be hard to get the attention of the untried with this one, although the gorgeous string arrangements were seductive enough to get me in the mood for another listen.
