| | SAF - Periodicals: Forestry Source - Researchers Join Forces to Accurately Assess Burn Severity |
 | | The latest in a series of initiatives by the Rapid Response project, researchers from the university and the federal agencies are using satellite data on fires and fire damage to create burn severity maps for use by the Forest Service's Burned-Area Emergency Rehabilitation teams. |
 | | Researchers believe that these burn severity maps, which can be created much faster, cover more area, and be more consistent than the current manually developed assessments, will enable BAER teams determine which fire-damaged lands need immediate attention to prevent erosion, soil loss, and adverse impacts to water quality. |
 | | Sohlberg says that this information, coupled with satellite data, GPS data, pre-fire site information, and fire characteristics, can then be used to create "burn severity algorithms" that will serve as the foundation of computer models currently being developed to accurately assess burn severity. |
