With the roar of a great fire fed by the wind, the 40-foot man that for the past week has been the focal point of this impromptu city went up in flames, a sacrifice to art fashioned of wood, steel and neon that set the sky alight.
More than 35,000 people gathered Saturday night in a great circle around the Burning Man for which the weeklong arts festival is named, each with his or her own interpretation of the fire's significance.

i_cola, Black Rock desert was for me a bigger highlite than Burning Man. I spent a few days traveling along the jeep trails and playa and recommend taking a 4x4, GPS and mapping software and 2 spare tires.
speaking of Burning Man (i know this isn't the most burner-friendly community in the world), i just got the ticket/theme info in the mail this weekend.

If you do have cash burning a hole in your pocket though, please give it to the Opulent Temple: their budget was quite in the red after the event, and they put out the best Trance you could get at Burning Man this year.
This year's man was quite technical: not only was the first floor an entire maze with lots of nice displays, but on the second floor, you could make the man rotate by pushing a gigantic gear with the help of other people.
Also, if you ran around the man when it was on fire, you probably won't even know which way is north, nor do you have any visual landmarks to tell you at this point (well, maybe the temple if you can see it).
