Burnham Market is one of the Burnhams, a group of adjacent villages in North Norfolk.
The smaller villages of Burnham Deepdale and Burnham Norton are within two miles to the west of Burnham Market, whilst Burnham Overy and Burnham Thorpe are a similar distance to the east.
Burnham Market is close to the mouth of the River Burn and the name Burnham probably derives from this.

It is one of the Burnhams, a group of adjacent villages in North Norfolk, and lies about a mile to the east of the larger village of Burnham Market, and a mile south of the village and tiny port of Burnham Overy and four miles west of the town and larger port of Wells-next-the-Sea.
Burnham Thorpe is famous for being the birthplace of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, victor at the Battle of Trafalgar and one of England's greatest heroes.
At the time of his birth, Nelson's father was rector of the church in Burnham Thorpe, and both the birthplace and the church can still be seen.

 Walk #254: Hunstanton to Wells-next-the-Sea
The windmill between Burnham Norton and Burnham Overy Staithe was a very nice example of this sort of building, with a nice location being matched by some pretty associated buildings.
Apparently Burnham Over Staithe is the place where it is thought hat Lord Nelson learnt to sail - he was born a couple of miles to the south at Burnham Thorpe.
This path is part of the North Norfolk Coast Path, and is very boggy as it is on the fringe of the tidal area of Brancaster Mow Creek, and it is therefore handily raised up on a wooden causey which in places was slippy due to the rain that had fallen the previous night.

The River Burn is a river in the north-west of the English county of Norfolk.
The river rises to the south of the village of South Creake and flows through the villages of North Creake, Burnham Thorpe and Burnham Overy Town before disgorging into the North Sea to the north of the village of Burnham Overy Staithe.
Between Burnham Overy Staithe and the sea, the river spreads out into multiple tidal creeks through the salt marshes that fringe the coast thereabouts, and finally leaves land behind by passing though the fronting sand dunes at a gap locally known as Burnham Harbour.

The new cut that was dug for the mill was tidal until before the second world war, with the surge being controlled by a sluice about a mile downstream.

The lovely little harbour at Overy Staithe is a good place to start, and before long we reach the sand at Holkham Bay, where we walk for two miles along the glorious beach with scarcely a soul in sight (signs warn of slumbering naturists).

 Walk #134: Burnham Deepdale to Wells-Next-The-Sea
The sea defences which we walked along on the eastern side of the River Burn after Burnham Overy Stithe were in the process of being strengthened, and this made for a very firm footpath which could be followed as far as the sand dunes.
Apparently this work is as part of a one million pound flood defence scheme, where the clay ambankments at Burnham Overy Staithe are being raised and widened and defences at Wells-Next-The-Sea were being improved.
Unfortunately Sam found the going from Burnham Overy quite hard, and this meant that progress was quite slow over the dunes and along the beach on the middle section of the walk.

Saturday’s paddle was planned from Burnham Overy Staithe, out to sea through the Eastern entrance, then west outside Scolt Head Island along the coast until our stomachs told us it was lunchtime.
The car shuttle was arranged and Frances Cooke joined us at Overy Staithe after seeing a friend off at Heathrow at 5.00 am.

Until the end of the nineteenth century Burnham Overy Staithe was a thriving sea port serving the Burnhams and inland to the Creakes.
The wealth of buildings on this walk was what really amazed me: the unique-looking church at Burnham Overy Town, the Pump House, the ruined Carmelite Friary and the abandoned windmill.
We started the walk at Burnham Market and it is well worth extending the walk by 0.5 mile in order to include this lovely village which is the largest of the Burnhams.
