The Burning Legion was led by Archimonde the Defiler and Kil'jaeden the Deceiver, two Eredar warlocks who possessed immense power.
They are responsible for the destruction of Draenor and the Draenei, for Kil'jaeden made the orcs drink Mannoroth's blood, therefore making the Blood Pact and binding their fates to the Legion forever.
The Burning Legion have tried to invade the world of Azeroth on two occasions; the first invasion nearly destroyed the world because of the explosion of the Well of Eternity and the second one resulted in the death of Archimonde and the near destruction of the World Tree.

The Burning Legion has almost been completely destroyed, from what I understand after Frozen Throne and the description of the WoW storyline.
The Warlocks magiks are fed to them by the Burning Legion, which means that it still existsÂ…just not on that planet.
