Burnout: Revenge Microsoft Xbox Video Game Review by AceGamez
Burnout: Revenge isn't a huge leap forward for the series compared to the evolution between Point of Impact and Takedown, but it is definitely an evolution for the franchise and once you play it you'll have a hard time going back to the old track designs.
Burnout has gone through a lot of changes since it made a splash in late 2001, back when Acclaim was publishing Criterion's legend-in-the-making series, a series that has evolved from being about crashing and narrowly escaping oncoming traffic to having a much bigger focus on shoving your opponents into this traffic.
The newest version, Burnout: Revenge, doesn't make a drastic leap forwards like the series made from Point of Impact to Takedown (understandably so, it has barely been a year since Takedown), perhaps this could be the reasoning for dropping the number from the title as well.

In Burnout 3, the only place this appeared was in "crash mode", which is a series of short puzzle events where the goal is to cause as much monetary damage to other vehicles as possible.
To those unfamiliar with the series, the Burnout games have had the basic premise of gaining "boost" (which is just like a 'turbo' bar that's been done in hundreds of racing games before, which provides drastic acceleration for a limited period of time) by "driving recklessly without actually getting into accidents".
In my mind, Burnout 3 is still the apogee of the series, but beyond that, Revenge is a fundamentally different game than any of it's predecessors.

Burnout Revenge Review for PlayStation 2 at Gaming Horizon
Veterans to the Burnout series will be hearing a lot of what they already know and will be tempted to skip the whole intro to the level, when there's usually a gem or two of new information that pertains to brand new features that they don't want to miss.
Burnout 3 will, for now, be the pinnacle of the Burnout series in my opinion, but Revenge is still an absolutely solid grade-A title that's worth your time and coin.
Criterion's answer is Burnout: Revenge, the ambitious new title which will attempt to do what previous games in the series have and kick it up a notch.

 IGN: Burnout Legends Review
As the Burnout series has always pushed consoles as much as Criterion could flex them, and with great results indeed, it was to be expected that Burnout Legends wouldn't be a 100% perfect rendition of its console brethren.
Sure, it's great that Criterion wanted to add a bit of the original Burnout into the mix, but there are two evident problems with this: Firstly, as mentioned, the racing style and track design is simply counter-intuitive to what we've come to expect from the series and essentially punishes you for racing as such.
While the tracks from Burnout 2 and 3 were designed with the intent of flying around banks at high speeds without punishing you for keeping your foot on the gas at all times, Harbour Town is much less forgiving.
