 New York Times
Ric Burns, Lisa Ades, and James Sanders have done the city proud and shameful, from the first Manhattan real-estate deal screwing the Lenape Indians -- which coincided oddly with the arrival of the first African slaves in 1626 -- all the way to Madison Avenue, the Empire State Building, Harlem, and jazz.
An excitable Greek chorus of historians sees these four centuries of immigration, indentured servitude, frantic money-grubbing, urban anxiety, civil disturbance, and artsy craftiness as "the supreme laboratory of modern life." The only vision anybody brought to this harbor was a bigger bank account, based on the pelts of dead beavers.
We are reminded only four hours into things that mercantile New York, having been crucial to the slave trade, invested heavily in cotton and sugar and was pro-South at the start of the Civil War.

Sidewalks is set in — big surprise — New York City and focuses on the lives of six characters who stagger through their lives searching for love (mostly in all the wrong places, too).
Burns does two things that make the film interesting: He uses a handheld camera to shoot most of Sidewalks, and he has each character hail from a different borough of the city (only one is an outsider).

Among them are sons and daughters of the city itself, marked by their various New York accents --not only biographer Robert Caro, novelist Peter Quinn and journalist Pete Hamill, but also upscale writer George Plimpton, who reads from the diaries of patrician lawyer and tireless observer of the streets George Templeton Strong.
Burns explains that he had to be ruthlessly economical, bringing people on stage and letting them fall away.
New York lingers occasionally on an event to let its effect accumulate, as with the horrifying tragedy of 1911, the Triangle Shirtwaist fire--right at Washington Square in Greenwich Village!--and the resulting strikes that led to workplace reforms.

How many cities in the world merit the sort of treatment Ric Burns give New York in a book that is easily twice the size of a typical text that might cover, say, all of American History.
Hyde, cousin of Queen Anne, was heartily disliked by the colonists--in part because he was reputed to dress in women's clothing ("I represent a woman, and ought in all respects to resemble her as faithfully as I can," Hyde was reported to have said).
Burns and company are clearly enamored of New York, seeing it as "the ultimate city of dreaming and desire, a place of passage and transformation, of possibility and exchange, of mingled cultures and identities." They also see New York, with all its ups, downs, problems, and triumphs, as a microcosm of the modern world.

A spectacular fire burned a storage facility on the Staten Island section of New York City Friday morning, killing one worker and briefly rattling market nerves as traders worried about its cause.
Televised reports of the blaze caused a $1-a-barrel increase in crude futures and initially depressed the stock averages, although they soon bounced back and in fact rallied on the day.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the blaze was contained mainly on the water and on two barges -- the one that exploded and then sank, and another that caught fire.

``The Center of the World'' is the eighth and final chapter of ``New York,'' Burns' 17 1/2-hour epic urban portrait spanning 400 years, whose first installments aired in November 1999, then was meant to conclude in late September 2001.
But we knew that it had happened because of political, cultural, ideological conflicts which are part of the world that we are all part of.
But befitting the project's tangled history, its initial purpose - to declare New York's crowning role in a new global order - was uneasily coupled with a localized push for urban renewal: the complex on Manhattan's blighted southern tip was supposed to spark an economic revival.

The sculpture of Robert Burns was restored and repatinated in 1993 when the quill, which had been missing for many years, was remodeled, cast, and attached by Central Park Conservancy.

The Madrid skyscraper that burned at the weekend did not have automatic sprinklers on the floor where the blaze started, the daily El Pais newspaper said, quoting a city hall official, while a city councillor warned the shattered edifice might still collapse.

Calvo told a news conference a plan was being drawn up to evacuate people living and working nearby if the skyscraper did come tumbling down.
