The east harbor arm is bordered by the Bethlehem Steel plant; the west harbor arm flanks the National Steel Corporations mill; and the central portion of the harbor, or north wharf, is occupied by the Cargill Grain Co. facility.

 Burns Waterway Harbor, Indiana
Burns International Harbor) is located on the southern shore of Lake Michigan about 22 miles southeast of Calumet Harbor in Porter County, Indiana.
The harbor includes 2,400 feet of non-federal steel sheet pile breakwater to the west connected to 5,830 feet of federally constructed rubblemound breakwaters to the west and north.
The harbor also includes a 30 feet deep by 400 feet wide approach channel, a 28 feet deep outer harbor basin and two 27 feet deep by 620 feet wide harbor arms to the east and west.

BURNS HARBOR -- Deliveries of steel and limestone weighed in at 110,000 tons more than last year at the Port of Indiana, helping to make the shipping season a strong one, state officials said.
The main increases at Burns Harbor were in steel, up 14 percent, and limestone, up 19 percent, Peacock said.
Helping to tip the scales at Burns Harbor was cargo handler Federal Marine Terminals, which unloaded 100,000 tons of rolled steel coils in August alone, up from an average of about 75,000 tons a month, General Manager Ian Hirt said.

Posting a three percent increase in international tonnage has earned the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor the prestigious Robert J. Lewis Pacesetter Award given by the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLSDC).
Burns Harbor posted a three percent jump in international tonnage handled in 2002 over the previous season with a final figure of more than one million net tons.
“The Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor has established itself as the top U.S. port for international shipping on the Great Lakes,” said William D. Friedman, executive director of the Ports of Indiana.
