Burnt Offerings - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Burnt Offerings is Iced Earth 's third album, released April 18, 1995, by Century Media Records.
Burnt Offerings was written during a time of turmoil and anger, particularly focusing on a dispute with the band's current record label, Century Media Records.
This album marked the addition of legendary metal vocalist Matt Barlow, who many fans, even after his exit from the band to work for the Department of Homeland Security following the September 11, 2001 attacks, consider to be "the" voice of Iced Earth.

Note: Burnt Offerings has been reissued/remastered with new artwork, which is again replacing a classic painting with more comic art.
Burnt Offerings starts out with a creepy intro that leads right into hellish riffs and amazing vocals by Barlow.
IE managed to achieve success, but thanks to their record label Century Media, they began a huge money dispute which sent the band into a bitter angry era which would greatly influence the sound of the next album they would release in a few years...

Encyclopaedia Metallum - Reviews for Iced Earth - Iced Earth
The riffing on the album is better than on any of the later three Iced Earth albums, and most of it can definitely be compared to Night of the Stormrider and Burnt Offerings.
Iced Earth could have been a much better album, worthy of a 90 or so, but as most people know, the vocalist on this album sucks.
When I first listened to Iced Earth’s self titled album, I was already used to the Barlow era Iced Earth, and I was eager to experience the album that started Iced Earth’s quest in the metal world.

I think the best thing about this album is that it combines the amazing riffs of the first two albums with the powerfull, epic vocals of Barlow (which is an appreciated step forward from their first two vocalists).
This album is to IE what Painkiller was to Judas Priest: a heavier than normal release which was fueled by traumatic events.
Even if the album didn't fare well, it proved that IE was a force to be reckoned with in the world of heavy metal.

Iced Earth - Satan Stole My Teddybear
Night of the Stormrider is probably their best CD (and interestingly also their fastest and thrashiest) - things start to decline after this (though Burnt Offerings is almost as good) and are really hopeless from the Dark Saga onwards.
This album showcases more of his clean voice than the others and his good tone, pure emotion, and his adherence to the school of "don't sing the song, BE the song" definitely adds another dimension to this album that would have been lost with Jon Greely or...
Riffs are often repeated throughout the album and give a good sense of continuity...thus, the album should be taken as a whole rather than a collection of random songs.

Something Wicked, much like Burnt Offerings, instrumentally places a lot of emphasis on heavy guitars and awesome solos as opposed to the more percussion-heavy Dark Saga.
Something Wicked This Way Comes is by far Iced Earth's best album, and is one no Iced Earth nor heavy metal fan should be without.
Well, after listening to it and every other Iced Earth album dozens of times I'm pleased to say that Something Wicked is not only Iced Earth's best album, but it is also among the best albums of the late 90's.

Yes, I understand Iced Earth has put out some great, time enduring material such as Something Wicked This Way Comes, Days Of Purgatory, and Burnt Offerings (although the lyrical focus for that album was needlessly negative most of the way through), but this album is none of those, in fact it doesn't even come close.
But for an album that was supposed to be stellar, a concept album (The Dark Saga is based around the story of Spawn), and an Iced Earth album to boot, this record as a whole seriously does not satisfy.
All this added up equals out to (in my opinion) a disappointing, rushed-sounding album, with too many bad cliches and lack of exciting inspiration to be salvaged by the 3 or 4 good songs.

The core of the set consists of Iced Earth's first three classic studio albums, "Iced Earth", "Night of the Stormrider", and "Burnt Offerings".
Century Media is determined to correct this problem, so if you have a mislabeled box set and would like correctly labeled CDs, send the four mislabeled CDs ("Iced Earth", "Night of the Stormrider", "Burnt Offerings", and "Enter the Realm") to Century Media, and they will immediately send you replacements, along with a "Century Media Goodie".
Each album has not only been remastered, but they have also been expertly remixed by Jim Morris from the original multi-track recordings.

In 1995 the band, after several new line-up changes, was dropped from Atlantic Records and they therefore decided to create their own label called Burnt Offerings Inc. In 1996 Testament split up during the pre-production for the seventh album.
Their second album made Testament one of the world's biggest metal bands and a tour was arranged with Megadeth, Voivod, Anthrax, Judas Priest and others.
Testament is one of the most successful American thrash metal bands over the years.

Matt Barlow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first album Matt can be heard on is "Burnt Offerings" (1995).
Matt Barlow was the vocalist for the heavy metal band Iced Earth.
Barlow joined Iced Earth after the "Night of the Stormrider" tour with Blind Guardian in Europe, as a replacement for John Greely.

Plenty of material from "Night Of The Stormrider" (and, since Matt Barlow is a much better vocalist, "Angel Holocaust" and "Traveling In Stygian" are much more ear-pleasing) and "Burnt Offerings," while the last two studio albums, "The Dark Saga" and "SWTWC" are covered virtually in their entirety.
One can only admire Matt: while quite often vocalists use all kinds of studio tricks to improve their singing and absolutely suck live (Piet Sielk of Iron Savior delivered a pretty disappointed performance on "Interlude," IMHO), he sounds just as great live as he does on studio albums, making this act a true gem.
It is the closest this album came to Demons & Wizards.

I know Jon Schaffer is himself not that fond of "Burnt Offerings", and I guess that was the reason for performing only one track from this album.
As Jon Schaffer earlier revealed in the interviews, they consisted of three parts, all lasting more or less 50 minutes and separated from one another by 10-15 minutes breaks.
And during "Damien" no acoustic guitar was brought for Jon (I think a mistake from the crew's side, and not a deliberate decision), so all the calmer parts were played with an electric guitar, which sounded pretty interesting.

Night of the Stormrider is probably their best CD (and interestingly also their fastest and thrashiest) - things start to decline after this (though Burnt Offerings is almost as good) and are really hopeless from the Dark Saga onwards.
Following thrash-cum-power-cum-heavy metal thrasher Night of the Stormrider and the similar sounding Iced Earth comes an album that sounds like neither of the two.
Unlike Night of the Stormrider, which has a good concept, but also a vocalist who doesn't execute well, this trilogy totally captivates the listener and sucks him in.
