Burr is said to have carried the fallen Montgomery for a short distance during the retreat from Quebec.
Burr returned quietly to New York in 1812, intending to visit his daughter, but the ship she had been traveling on from South Carolina was lost at sea (either due to piracy or shipwreck), along with all of Burr's important papers.

Aaron Burr was a central figure in American public life for nearly three decades, but is remembered mainly for two episodes in his life: his duel with Alexander Hamilton in 1804 and his schemes of empire-building that formed the basis for his 1807 treason trial.
Burr's ambitions in conventional politics came to an end in 1804 when he was defeated in his bid for the governorship of New York.
Burr's dreams, of course, went unrealized, and he became the defendant in an 1807 treason trial that is the focus of this website.

Burr requested “a prompt and unqualified acknowledgment or denial” of the “despicable opinion” attributed to Hamilton.
Frustrated, Burr wrote back to Hamilton, accusing him of insincerity and demanding a “definite reply.” Hamilton again refused to discuss any comments he may have made, claiming only that they “would not have been found to exceed the limits justifiable among political opponents.” He then blankly refused to respond to any further questions.
On the morning of July 11, 1804, Burr and Hamilton met at Weehawken, an isolated strip of land on the New Jersey shore of the Hudson River.

Burr, who designed a trussed arch, and Wernwag, who designed a braced arch, seem to have understood the problem better than most, and their bridges proved quite successful.

The annexation included the area known as Burr Ridge Estates, which had been developed into 5 acre tracts in the early 1950s by the Busby family, whose farm included the ridge along County Line Road near Plainfield Road that they called “the burr ridge” due to the large stand of burr oak trees.
Today, Burr Ridge is generally bounded on the east by Wolf Road, on the north by 55th Street, on the west by Madison Street (and Route 83 in the southern portion of the Village) and on the south by approximately 97th Street.

Burr is a pivotal figure in American history but unfortunately he is one whose role is rarely understood beyond the incident with Hamilton and the accusation of his planned western uprising.
