Situated in the valley of Sunday Creek, the Burr Oak area was inhabited by Indians and, later, by settlers who found an abundance of game animals and the resources necessary for survival in the Ohio wilderness.
In 1950 Burr Oak Lake was created by the construction of the Tom Jenkins Dam across the east branch of Sunday Creek.

Kadi Ryan says the education at Burr Oak School gave her a good foundation for high school in Broken Bow and there are some advantages to a town school.
I know the parents around that have the little kids are really thankful they don't have to send their kids 25 miles or 20 miles to town and that they don't have to ride a bus and that they still have a school that's fairly close for them to go to.

Burr Oak Woods State Forest is in Jackson County, 20 miles east of downtown Kansas City.
The forest is composed of 1,071 acres of woodlands, fields and ponds and includes a scenic portion of Burr Oak Creek.
Nearly 70 percent of Burr Oaks Woods is forested and contains a wide variety of tree species, including white oak, red oak, chinkapin oak, fl walnut, hackberry, white ash, shagbark hickory, Kentucky coffetree and many others.

Burr Ridge is located in Cook County (Lyons Township) and DuPage County (Downers Grove Township), with County Line Road being the east/west dividing line (DuPage County to the west, Cook County to the east).
The annexation included the area known as Burr Ridge Estates, which had been developed into 5 acre tracts in the early 1950s by the Busby family, whose farm included the ridge along County Line Road near Plainfield Road that they called “the burr ridge” due to the large stand of burr oak trees.
Today, Burr Ridge is generally bounded on the east by Wolf Road, on the north by 55th Street, on the west by Madison Street (and Route 83 in the southern portion of the Village) and on the south by approximately 97th Street.

Carr is trying to find a way to preserve a centuries old Burr Oak tree and a brick barn house located on land she owns at 3348 West National Road in Englewood.
The mighty oak has been examined by former Aullwood naturalist Paul Knoop and Dane Mutter, who at the time was assistant director of the Montgomery County Park District as well as Scott Huston, then director of the Miami County Park District.
The oak is roughly 19 feet in circumference and is still growing larger.

Jeremy Krok, a baseball fan whose driving force is a deep sense of familial commitment, last year journeyed to Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, Ill., a suburb about 20 miles southwest of Chicago, to visit the gravesite of Crutchfield, a four-time All-Star outfield in the Negro Leagues.
To his amazement, he was informed by the cemetery that another Negro Leagues player was buried at Burr Oak in an unmarked grave: John Donaldson, one of the best left-handed pitchers in Negro Leagues history.
A dedication ceremony at Burr Oak is scheduled for the unveiling of the markers, but no exact date has been pinned down.
