Burr Oak in Winneshiek County, Iowa, is a small village on Highway 52 about three or four miles south of the Minnesota state line.
This is the Burr Oak Mercantile, which used to be the "general store" when I was a boy, just like what you see in TV Westerns.
Located at the north end of Burr Oak, it was built near a bend in Silver Creek which meanders through the town.

Jeremy Krock, a baseball fan whose driving force is a deep sense of familial commitment, last year journeyed to Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, Ill., a suburb about 20 miles southwest of Chicago, to visit the gravesite of Crutchfield, a four-time All-Star outfielder in the Negro Leagues.
To his amazement, he was informed by the cemetery that another Negro Leagues player was buried at Burr Oak in an unmarked grave: John Donaldson, one of the best left-handed pitchers in Negro Leagues history.
Burr Oak and its parent company, Perpetua Inc., have been extremely helpful to the cause, Krok said, donating labor for the installation and the dedication, as well as donating a new marker for Crutchfield's wife.

Emmett was staying with his uncle Mose "Preacher" Wright (also buried at Burr Oak) near Money, Mississippi, an area of crushing poverty where racial tensions were already high.
While bragging to his cousins and other local youths that he had a white girlfriend at home, one of them challenged him to talk to a white woman in a store.
She is buried in the most prominent location at Burr Oak, just inside the entrance, and near the site of the future Emmett Till Museum.

Burr Oak has many hiking trails and 4 boat docks, but the backpacking trail is something of a disappointment.
My advice to Burr Oak Trail Crew, copy the trail design from the other side of the lake (the lodge side) and build a new trail.
I was not very impressed with the trail building that Burr Oak State Park has implemented, but I do compliment them with their effort to open up more of the backcountry in the park to people who have the initiative to go see it.

Carolyn Towns, director of operations for Burr Oak, said about 100 people are expected at Sunday's ceremony in the cemetery where singer Dinah Washington and teen murder victim EmmettTill are buried.
The situation at Burr Oak is not unusual, Lester said.

It is located at the junction of 1st Drive and County Highway G, about 2 ½ miles south of Wisconsin State Highway 21 and about 1/3 of a mile north of the junction of County Highways G and J. Gordon and Mary Lee Klaus transcribed this cemetery in August of 2006.
