Burrton is located in southwestern Harvey [HV] County beside highway US50.  A main line of the AT&SF also runs through Burrton.  When railroads were more common both the Frisco and the Arkansas Valley Interurban also stopped in Burrton.
Burrton was on the Saint Louis-San Francisco Railroad.
Burrton appears on a county map in the 1877-78 Biennial Report of the State Board of Agriculture.

EDISON E. The Shive family have been identified with Kansas more than forty-five years and have supplied much of the means and personal ability to the banking business of Harvey and Reno counties.
He is president of the Burrton State Bank, having been with that institution when it was established in 1809 under a state charter.
He was born in Harvey County September 3, 1879, was graduated from the Burrton High School in 1898, and in April of that year enlisted at the outbreak of the Spanish-American War in Company E of the Twenty-first Kansas Regiment.

The John Schrag espionage case was the dramatic climax to the dilemma of Kansas Mennonites in World War I. For John Schrag was chosen to be the symbol and the bearer of the American community's mistrust and hatred of German-speaking pacifists in the tense days of 1918.
On November 11, 1918, a group of patriotic citizens in Burrton, Kansas, decided that the time was ripe for a showdown.
Schrag was finally rescued from the Burrton crusaders-for-American-democracy by the Harvey County sheriff who came that evening to take him to the county jail in Newton for cleaning and safe-keeping.

Born in Burrton, Kansas on July 5th, 1904, Hugh Milburn Stone never forgot his roots, nor how they influenced his way of life.
When Mil was young, the family moved to Ft. Lerned when his father took a job operating a grain elevator, but they moved back to Burrton after his father died of pneumonia in 1917.
In 1925, while playing in Delphos, Kansas, Milburn met and fell in love with Ellen Kelman (Nellie) Morrison, a local preacher's daughter.
