Burslem is sited on the eastern ridge of the Fowlea Valley, the Fowlea being one of the main early tributaries of the River Trent.
At the 1991 census count, the population of Burslem was 21,400.
In Burslem at 2001 unemployment was 3.2 percent and declining.

Burslem's major role in developing the region saw it referred to as the Mother Town of the Potteries and this title crops up on occasion today.
The people of Burslem perhaps were a little too prejudiced and built a new Town Hall when the City was being formed, so sure were they that they would be made the City Centre and local government would be located in the town.
Burslem's place in the record books is set in gold but the region had thrived long before the industrial revolution and the original major parish of the area was chosen for local government, the City's name being taken from it and the major market town lent itself as the obvious choice of City Centre.

Bursalem School of Art is located in Burslem in the Potteries district of England.
Traces of ceramics work can be found on the site of the school dating back to the Middle Ages.
Each of the towns making up the city of Stoke-on-Trent had its own art school, but from the early twentieth century Burslem School of Art had the best building (designed by Wood, a local architect) and the School became pre-eminent in the district.

As Burslem grew into a commercial centre a postal service was introduced to meet the needs of outside trading, advertising and negotiation.
The first evidence of the post coaches visiting the Potteries is mentioned by the local historian Ernest Warrillow who refers to a local newspaper advertisement in 1813 to the letting of the Kings Head in Shelton as a coaching house.
By 1820, and although Waterloo Road in Burslem was up and running, the preferred coaching route out of Cheshire through Burslem was via Brownhills out of Tunstall, along Liverpool Road (now Westport Road) passing through the town centre and into Bourne’s Bank.
