Burt's inventions included America’s first writing machine ("typographer"), but it was his solar compass that earned him fame as one of the most accurate of the early pioneer surveyors.
While he was running lines, Burt first encountered what was to be a recurrent problem for all the government surveyors of that era: the frequent disturbance of the magnetic compasses by mineral attraction.
The heavy brush took its toll on clothing, and as Burt neared the Superior shore, he wrote his wife that his "Coat and Pantiloons are most gone", and requested that she make him a new outfit from the "strongest kind of bedticking".

This township was surveyed in 1862, and was named after the town of Cardiff in Glamorganshire, Wales, noted for its castle and church, founded in A.D. The town is situated on the Bristol Channel and was once surrounded by a wall in which were five gates.
This township was also named in honor of a distinguished soldier, Brigadier General Sir William Eyre, born in 1805, died 1859, entered the 6th regiment of infantry in 1823 as an ensign and was promoted through all the steps, until in 1854 he received his command of a brigade in the army of the east.
This township was surveyed in 1872 and was named in honor of Sir Colin Campbell, grand officer of the Legion of Honor, a Field Marshal in the British Army, Commander-in-Chief in the East Indies, born near Glasgow in 1792, died in 1863.

About 1853 his parents removed to Sweden township, Potter Co., Penn., and purchased a tract of over 200 acres of land; this was cleared, and they became prominent citizens of that township.

This survey township of Hannibal included all of the present county of Oswego lying west of the Oswego River, except the north thirty-three lots of the township of Lysander, which, when Oswego county was formed, were included in that county, and now form a part of the town of Granby.
This continued until February 28, 1806, when the military township of Hannibal was separated from Lysander and made a town by the name of Hannibal in the county of Onondaga.
When Oswego county was formed, March 1, 1816, the town of Hannibal and the north thirty-three lots of Lysander were taken from Onondaga county and made a part of Oswego county, and the thirty-three lots were annexed to the town of Hannibal, which thereby included all of Oswego county lying west of the river.

The Company which had purchased ten townships in the district, agreed to assist in supporting a missionary and that same year the Reverend Frederick Burt was appointed.
