Burton Lane received his first Oscar nomination for the song, "How About You," sung in the movies, "Babes on Broadway," by Mickey Rooney and the now grown up and established star, Judy Garland, whom Lane had discovered years before.
Lane was especially pleased by the honor, since it came to him as an expression of his peers.
Lane served three terms on the Board of Directors for the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers and was a Songwriters' Hall of Fame inductee in 1971.

After dropping out of high school, Lane was one of the many composers who spent time in the evocative profession of song-plugging.
Lane went to Hollywood in 1933 and by his mid-twenties he had contributed songs to several movies, working with lyricists of the calibre of Ralph Freed, Ted Koehler, and Frank Loesser.
In 1949, Lane, was invited by close friend Dorothy Fields to collaborate with her on proposed musical Arms and the Girl.

In fact, he was credited with starting Garland's movie career after spotting her singing at a Hollywood nightspot.
Lane is best known for two Broadway musicals, Finian's Rainbow (with such classic songs as "How Are Things in Glocca Morra") which Francis Ford Coppola made into a movie in 1968, and On A Clear Day You Can See Forever, filmed in 1970 with Barbra Streisand.
