Marimba - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Choice of grip varies by region (Stevens grip and Burton grip are more popular in the United States, while traditional grip is more popular in Japan), by instrument (Burton grip is less likely to be used on marimba than on vibraphone) and by the taste of the individual performer.
For use of two mallets is each hand, the most common grips are the Burton grip (made popular by Gary Burton), the traditional grip (or "cross grip"), the Musser grip, and the Stevens grip (made popular by Leigh Howard Stevens).
Each grip is perceived to have its own benefits and drawbacks.

Yes, each has its strengths and weaknesses - it’s easier to hold a constant interval between the mallets of one hand with Burton than it is with Stevens, and it’s a bit easier to do quick interval changes using the Stevens grip vs. the Burton - but those are initial tendencies, not absolute limits!
“This is the marimba grip, and that is the vibraphone grip.” It’s a myth that has gotten passed on from generation to generation over the past few decades.
My take on the subject of learning several different grips is: while I recommend trying several different grip techniques, I also recommend eventually selecting one and sticking with it.

If you play with the Stevens grip and work on melodic virtuosity, or Burton 's and work on rotation, you come up with pretty much the same results, there is not such a big difference, unless you want to get lost in the details.
Today I think one can play vibraphone very well with a Stevens grip or marimba with Burton 's.
There has been some debate between percussionists about the proper grip to use depending on the instrument and the repertoire.

My opinion about the grip depends on the type of repertoire you play, and what your primary mallet instrument is. The Burton grip does make much more sense for the vibraphone than the Stevens grip, especially when effective dampening becomes a natural part of your playing.
I would like to try using the Burton grip, which I find more natural than the Stevens grip.
Yes, the range is more limited than the Stevens grip.

 Overview of 4 mallet grip
The Burton grip is also a cross stick grip as the traditional except that the outside mallet is on top of the inside mallet instead.
Stevens' term, the grip is very similar to the Musser Grip except that it operates with a thumb-facing-up position at all times with some exception, and that the inside mallet does not pivot at one point in the palm but rather moving in a curved line in the palm when the interval is spreading.
It is one of the most if not the most employed grip nowadays, due to its great ability to execute large intervals such as tenth, rapid interval changes, fine independent control over each mallet individually, ability to play one handed roll, just to name a few.

LHS is a derivative of the Musser grip and Burton is a derivative of the cross-over grip.
However stevens grip is more versatile in the whole I'd say, but both have their place, and a well-rounded percussionist should be able to perform with either, modifying their own habits to fit the situational needs of the literature.
I prefer the Musser grip on marimbas, which is actually the basis for the LHS grip.

Steven's Grip - Marching Band Planet
Stevens' grip does give a larger range (a note or 2 on marimba depending on the range) and independence is slightly easier (only 1 mallet moves).
Steven's grip is concidered the "independent grip" because of it's great ability to control each mallet individually and the classic ability to play one handed rolls (not saying you can't do it with a cross grip.
Burton will give you more sound out of the vibes wheras Steven (or Musser) is more flexable for interval changes, and playing large intervals which are necessary for marimba.

Traditional marimba bands are specially popular in Costa Rica, where they are the national symbol of culture, but are also found in Guatemala and parts of the highlands of southern Mexico, as well as among Afro-Ecuadorians; gyil duets are the traditional music of Dagara funerals in Ghana.
The bars of the marimba are wider and thinner than those of the xylophone; this change in shape causes the bars to respond a different set of overtones found in the overtone series, giving the instrument a richer tone.

Now, by the son et lumiere method of blending sound and light that can so emotively evoke times past, the checkered history of this house and its historic figures is being told nightly by a cast of distinguished voices including that of Richard Burton.
Blenheim was born out of the blood of battles, built through burning periods of banishment and intrigue, and from its first stone it has nurtured, attracted and sheltered big, great, colorful people whose stories have the grip of passion and the scent of romance.
