Burton upon Trent also known as Burton-on-Trent, or simply Burton, is a large town straddling the River Trent in the east of Staffordshire, England, which originally grew up around the monastery of St. Modwen.
Burton came to dominate this trade, and at its height one quarter of all beer sold in Britain was produced here.
The Burton suburb of Branston is where the well-known Branston Pickle was invented.

Burton-upon-Trent (Burhton) is first mentioned towards the close of the 9th century, when St Modwen, an Irish virgin, is said to have established a convent on the Isle of Andressey opposite Burton.
A fine bridge over the Trent, and the municipal buildings, were provided by Lord Burton.
Burton was evidently a mesne borough under the abbot, who held the court of the manor and received the profits of the borough according to the charter of Henry I. granting sac and soc and other privileges and right in the town.

In its passage north through Burton the river Trent contains several islands, small ones in the Burton Extra stretch and larger ones near the abbey, the latter including Horse holme (on the Stapenhill side), Ox hay, Andresey, and Broad holme; the largest island, Burton meadow, was formed by a major division of the river.

A reference to a 'warden of the boys' (custos puerorum) in Burton in 1390 suggests that there may have been an almonry school in the abbey; almonry foundations were common in greater monasteries in the 14th century, with the boys assisting in the celebration of private masses.
A drama centre, opened by Burton corporation in the premises of the former Guild Street school in 1946, became the school of drama and speech training later that year; 198 children and 299 adults were enrolled in 1947.
There must have been private schools in Burton from the mid 16th century in order to feed pupils to the grammar school, but the earliest ones recorded are those run by the seven schoolmistresses and schoolmasters recorded in 1793, which included at least one girls' boarding school and at least one boys' academy.
