The cottage is a five minute walk from Burtonport which is a small but bustling fishing port on the breathtakingly rugged Atlantic coast.
The area has a long established reputation for catering for holiday makers, attracted by the virtually deserted golden beaches, excellent golf, watersports, hill walking, riding and world class sea and freshwater angling or..., if it's sight seeing that you're after..., feast your eyes.
The Burtonport festival takes place in the third week of July and is closely followed by the "Mary from Dungloe festival" which is a truly international extravaganza, drawing contestants from all around the world.

During 1985-6 when the water mains were extended to Burtonport harbour arrangements were made to lay pipes under the new pier to provide an out-fall for the expected sewerage scheme.
As Burtonport no longer seems to be considered for Structural Funds under the Operational Programme for Environmental Services or the INTERREG 2 initiative, it is dependent on the national Exchequer for funding.
In the interests of the fishing industry, employment in the area, the tourism industry and the exciting development planned for Burtonport, I request the Minister to have a sympathetic look at this scheme and initiate the process that will allow it to commence and be brought to conclusion during his term in office.

In the 1980s, Burtonport was one of the busiest fishing ports on the west coast with its many trawlers and half-deckers.
Burtonport Fishermen's Co-op also have developed their lobster markets and continue to provide a service for the seasonal fishermen and the local 15 small boats working seasonally between Burtonport and Arranmore.

On 1 April 1862, Burtonport was transferred to the control of Strabane, which in 1860 had assumed control of the whole of North West Donegal including Letterkenny, which had been reduced to the status of a sub office.
These did not include Burtonport, but now substantial volumes of mail previously sorted and transferred at Strabane were handled at Lifford where a new post office had been built immediately adjacent to the station.
The Burtonport Extension of the Londonderry and Lough Swilly Railway ran as far as Gweedore until January 1947 so perhaps mail was transferred back to that line during the war years.

However, the most significant development was the establishment of the Letterkenny and Burtonport Extension Railway which, beginning with an end-on connection with the LandLSR at Letterkenny swung first southwards before turning northwards and, following the lie of the land, tracing a route towards Creeslough, near the north coast.
Although the majority of the locos were tank engines of various sizes - including two massive 4-8-4T locos for the heavy freight workings and runs out to Burtonport, the line also operated two 4-8-0 tender locos, the only ones of this type to operate on an Irish narrow-gauge railway.
The Second World War gave the Burtonport line a repreive however as turf fuel from the high bogs around Gweedore became a vital resource and kept the line going until 1947.

After the sea tragedies of 1976, morale was low in the fishing village of Burtonport.
After the success of the initial festival, the community was eager to follow on the next year and with Mick and David still at the helm, the Burtonport Festival continued on the road to the 25 years we are celebrating this year.
Another very special person involved with the festival for many years and was the festival’s no 1 fundraiser, is John Joe Duffy, and we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate him or being ordained Deacon on Easter Monday and we look forward to his final ordination in July 2002.

In truth, I have to confess my knowledge of Donegal geography is somewhat limited, prior to today I have been there for the total of seven days and the most recent of those would be 12 years ago, almost to the day, now that I think of it.
