Burtonwood was the maintenance and supply base for the US Air Force in Europe in WWII being responsible for about another 30 bases throughout the UK and over 70,000 personnel.
Burtonwood alone processed, 11,575 aircraft between 1943 and 1945 plus over 40,000 engines and all component parts to aircraft and all support equipment.
Burtonwood reopened to support the Cold War but initially undertook the overhaul and maintenance of the aircraft in the Berlin airlift 1948-9 then maintained all aspects of aircraft, ground equipment, and all support equipment and personnel for the USAF in Europe.

The annual Battle of Britain Parade was held at the RAF Burtonwood base on the 21st September 2003 and was attended by local dignitaries, branch members and guests from the local area.
After the service we retired for refreshments in the members lounge of the RAF Burtonwood Heritage Centre, which maintains a collection of memorabilia from yesteryear when the base was occupied by the American/British forces during and after World War II.
Burtonwood branch is a small branch with only 54 members, but with only about 8 active members who undertake the various positions on the branchcommittee and also take a very active part in the collections for the RAFA Wings Appeal.

The stretch of Burtonwood Road the police say they followed me along is initially a dual carriageway (for over 200 yards) that does not have a sign on both sides of the road until 200 yards from the J8/M62 (150mm repeater).
Be aware though that going from Warrington to Burtonwood on the Burtonwood road that the signs are correctly sited, as are signs if you are coming off the motorway itself.

The locomotive was purchased by Burtonwood Brewery in November 1973 on behalf of the Flint and Deeside Railway Society, and was stored behind the Nant Hotel in Prestatyn until the Society moved to Llangollen in 1975.
The locomotive was named Burtonwood Brewer in honour of the brewery, who paid for restoration and fitting of vacuum brake gear required for working passenger trains.
Its ten-year overhaul fell due in 1997, and to enable this to proceed, the Llangollen Railway Trust took on ownership from Burtonwood Brewery in 1998.
