The Burundi franc has continued to slide gradually downward and due to the country's inability to pay service charges, the external debt has climbed to $1.3 billion, 180% of the Gross Domestic Product.
If the DRC settlement holds, Burundi should benefit, although already there has been infiltration of Interahamwe and ex-FAR passing through Burundi in the hope of destabilising Rwanda, as well an increase in the number of Burundian FDD rebels coming in from the DRC.
Burundi's population of over 6.5 million had its share of problems before 1993 but these were multiplied by the crisis and its continuation over the past eight years.
