One knowledgeable observer estimated that between 750 and 900 children aged seven to twelve years of age were recruited and trained in one year in Bururi.
Human Rights Watch researchers were able to obtain the name and other identifying information about the youngest of these children, who was widely known for having begun his military service when he was seven years old.

The "Prison Shrine of Bururi spontaneously reminds one of the chapel in the concentration camp of Dachau.
Some months ago, a group of Schoenstatt prisoners in the jail of Bururi (114 kilmeters to the south of Bujumbura) expressed the desire to receive the visit of the Pilgrim MTA in jail.
The chaplain of the jail waited for Sisters Lisette, Sister M. Virginie and Sister Fidele Havyarimana (who is in charge of the Schoenstatt Men’s Branch) in the street in front of the jail, to lead them to a house close to the prison that was built by the diocese.

NAIROBI, 17 Mar 2004 (IRIN) - Some 200 former fighters loyal to Pierre Nkurunziza arrived in a training camp in the southwestern province of Bururi on Tuesday, where they are due to undergo training as a unit of the new National Defence Forces of Burundi, the Burundian news agency, ABP, reported.
ABP quoted Nshimirimana as saying that 1,200 soldiers, 800 from the government and 400 from the CNDD-FDD, would be trained to form a new security unit to be known as the Special Unit for the Protection of Institutions.
Meanwhile, ABP reported that 42 child soldiers, among them two girls, who were part of local vigilante groups in Bururi, were handed over to their families on Tuesday.

It is rumoured that the latter is related to the presence of a large rebel group who came from the camps in Zaire, crossing Lake Tanganyika to Bururi province.
