 Launch of the Burwood MERIT Programme
It is a great pleasure to be launching the Magistrates' Early Referral Into Treatment (MERIT) programme in Burwood today in conjunction with the NSW Special Minister of State, John Della Bosca and Major Brian Watters, Chairman of the Australian National Council on Drugs.
I am delighted to be part of the launch of the Burwood Magistrates' Court MERIT Programme and I wish the programme every success.
The MERIT programme is an important component of the response to the Council of Australian Governments' Illicit Drug Diversion Initiative.

The Cooks River Foreshores Working Group is a regional association, initiated by the councils (Bankstown, Burwood, Canterbury, City of Sydney, Marrickville, Rockdale and Strathfield), located along the Cooks River foreshore.
The Cooks River Foreshores Working Group (CRFWG), of which Council is a founding and active member, was recently selected as one of four finalists in the nationwide United Nations Association of Australia (Victoria) World Environment Day 2005 Awards.
Council was a key instigator of efforts to develop a regional strategic plan to guide the foreshore councils and other key stakeholders in a coordinated and holistic approach to the management of the river system.

STRATHFIELD Councillor Andrew Ho has welcomed the landmark announcement of new national standards for polling booths to improve access for people with disabilities, in the lead up to local government elections in Burwood and Strathfield on Saturday, July 15th.
Strathfield Council last month considered a progress report on the Cooks River Environmental Assessment and Education Project, which is funded from a $1.3 million Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Stormwater Trust Grant and administered by the coalition of thirteen councils in the Cooks River catchment area.
In his report to Strathfield Council, senior environmental health officer Sam Cappelli, who is also a member of the project’s steering committee, said, "The three major elements of the project are proceeding to plan although the target of 2000 businesses to be assessed before 30 June 2000 may need to be revised.

 Scoop: Slow road for New Brighton Mall supported
A new slow road to reopen New Brighton Mall to traffic has been supported by the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board seven years after it was first mooted to revive a flagging retail area that was once the darling of weekend shoppers.
The road is one of 11 top priority projects outlined in the wider New Brighton Revitalisation Master Plan that was released in September 2002, after an extensive consultation involving a series of public meetings and presentations to the Council, says the Council project manager for New Brighton Mall, Jeanette Ward.
Many of the revitalisation projects were running in parallel with the mall upgrade while others, due to the longer planning times needed, would take a little longer.

Cr Weiley said the council's planners had conducted an economic feasibility study which suggested the developer levy could be capable of raising the $100 million needed to pay for the station upgrade and further plans outlined in the Vision document for the area around Burwood railway and the town centre.
There is some activity going on in this area, particularly in relation to highrise development in suburbs such as Strathfield, Burwood, Ashfield and on former industrial sites along the Parramatta River.

In 1894 the Scottish Australian Mining Company purchased the mine from the Burwood Coal Company.

 Wantirna, Victoria
An agricultural research station and experimental research station were opened in 1956, the latter named after Sir George Knox, orchardist, poultry farmer and local M.L.A. The rapid urbanisation of Wantirna occurred after the formation of the Knox shire, whose council quickly raised loans for road making and community facilities.
The nearest main road, Burwood Highway, divides Wantirna from Wantirna South.
Wantirna South was recognised as a locality in 1928 when a mail service was begun.
