Bury Grammar School has a very long history with indisputable evidence that it existed as early as the sixteenth century.
The growth of the town of Bury, first in the manufacture of paper and textiles, then as a centre of commerce closely linked to the diverse and bustling Manchester conurbation, continually increased the demands made upon the School.
Although the School is a Christian foundation there are also many members of other faiths and of none; all boys, whatever their background, are welcomed and encouraged to maintain a proper respect for the beliefs and opinions of others.

This family found itself on the losing side of Richard III in the War of the Roses and consequent on the battle of Bosworth in 1485 had their lands confiscated, Thomas Pylkington was executed and the estate presented to the Stanleys, who were created Earls of Derby.
The Derbys still hold the advowson of St. Mary the Virgin, Bury, even though the manor house which was one of twelve Lancashire fortified halls was destroyed in 1644 by Commonwealth troups.
He died on 18th June 1695 and was buried at Bury Parish Church after completing a ministry stretching forty-five years over one of the most troubled periods of church history.

John Hartington was one of 97 former pupils of Bury Grammar School to die in the Great War.
His successor as school captain, John Maddox, was killed at Delville Wood during the Battle of the Somme.
In October 2004 a memorial plaque to the Bury Grammar School dead will be dedicated at St George’s Church Ieper, during the school’s tenth anniversary battlefields tour.

World Challenge Expeditions was interested in bringing school groups to Nepal to work with local communities on conservation projects and approached KEEP after hearing about KEEP's long-term involvement in conservation activities in Nepal.

We teach French to all boys in the first four years of the senior school, and we try to make the experience an enjoyable and rewarding one which will encourage them to continue their language studies to a higher level after GCSE and to see language learning in general as a worthwhile activity.
