Busways, however, have been built in a number of North American cities, also in Brazil and Japan: in two cases which we visited, it was clear that an important consideration was the availability of existing rail, tram or road corridors suitable for building busways.
In all cases guided busways and busways seem not to be suitable for city centres as they are too obtrusive and the feasibility for integration into a denser built up urban environment is difficult or impossible.
Busways and existing guided buses emerge as useful additions to the instruments available for public transport, but probably limited to a specific fringe role—making use, on occasion, of disused rail lines (but not justifying replacing a still-functioning rail system), and for use in some outer areas.

These bus systems can come in a variety of different forms, from dedicated busways that have their own rights-of-way (e.g., Ottawa's Transitway) to bus services that utilize HOV lanes and dedicated freeway lanes (e.g., Honolulu's CityExpress) to limited stop buses on pre-existing routes.

Busway is a modular power distribution system that consists of solid, insulated copper or aluminum bars (one for each phase and one for ground + one for neutral in 4-wire systems) encased in a metal housing.
Busway makes sense not only in industrial plants, but also in commercial properties (especially if the use changes occasionally), high-rise buildings, hospitals, etc. Early versions of busway tended to be ventilated, but much better insulation has resulted in totally enclosed systems.
