  Albany Pine Bush
The Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission was created by the NYS Legislature in 1988 to protect and manage the unique and endangered natural communities and species of the Albany Pine Bush for ecological, recreational and educational benefits.
Mechanical Treatments--Since 1995 the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission, in cooperation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, has used a machine called a hydro-axe (click here to see a photo) to mow dense scrub-oak thickets, primarily in the more open, barrens areas of the Preserve.
Mechanical management will probably be used on a limited basis for a number of years until a complete rotation of burning has occurred on these lands in the preserve.

Bushing - WOI Encyclopedia Italia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
A stiffer bushing provides a more stable ride and prevents wobbling at higher speeds where a softer bushing allows for a softer ride with the ability to carve turns more easily.
Bushings are also used to transfer loads from a fastening to a much larger area in the underlying structure, the object being to reduce the strain on individual fibers within the underlying structure.
In electrical engineering a bushing is a component that allows a high voltage conductor to pass safely through an earthed metal wall or casing.

Bush also labored in a haze of smoke, and not just the one emanating from the pipe that was his constant companion.
Bush's plans led directly to the two crown jewels of this federally funded innovation system: the National Science Foundation, which funds university professors, and the Advanced Research Project Agency, the Pentagon's chief avenue for basic research.
Bush's fans are less concerned with his failures than they are impressed by his attempt to humanize the brute force of computing - to place these machines in the service of personal and social goals.

Bush's best years - he was born in 1890 - came before professors were millionaires and venture capitalists were presidents' pals.
Bush was also among the first to see the importance of venture capital and the way risk-taking inventors, drawing on top-flight universities, could spawn whole new industries - and, in the process, destroy the inefficient corporate oligarchies that ruled America from the turn of the century until the 1980s.
Bush envisioned it as a universal library, relying on microfilm to store vast amounts of text, crammed onto a desktop.

Bush (mechanical) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A bush is a mechanical fixing between two, possibly moving, parts, or a strengthened fixing point where one mechanical assembly is attached to another.
In a car or other vehicle's suspension, bushes are used to connect the various moving arms and pivot points to the chassis and other parts of the suspension.
Another type of bush is a hardened threaded fixing hole which allows one assembly to be fixed to another by means of a screw or threaded bolt.

Bush says he first came in contact with Kopin when he was a consultant for an Asian company, Telecom Holdings, a telecommunications company whose executives wanted to invest in the United States.

Bush Will Stop at Nothing to Win
Frantic to revive Bush's chances by any means, the candidate, his brother, Florida Governor Jeb Bush, and cousin John Ellis of the Fox Network devised a hastily-arranged strategy to salvage the election of a losing candidate.
Bush and his forces were already setting the stage for acceptance of their fraudulent absentee ballots, and thus ultimate legitimacy of his ill-gotten election.
Counted in Bush's total Florida vote are at least 4,700 of the 15,000 already counted absentee GOP ballots cast by residents of Seminole County prior to Election Day, upon which Sandra Goard, the Republican county elections supervisor allowed Republicans to change absentee ballot requests.

Vannevar Bush's Analog Computer -- The Differential Analyser
To provide amplification, Bush employed torque amplifiers which were based on the same principle as a ship's capstan.
In 1935 Bush developed a second version, in which the gears were shifted electro-mechanically and which employed paper tapes to carry instructions and to set up the gears.
In addition to all of the mechanical elements, it contained 2000 vacuum tubes, thousands of relays, 150 motors, and approximately 200 miles of wire.

Led by electrical engineer Vannevar Bush, a team of scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, began working on a "differential analyser" in 1930.
Put into use a year later, Bush's machine, an important step above mechanical adding machines, was the first modern analog computer, and the ancestor of electronic calculators.

 Claude Shannon (1916 - 2001)
In the best tradition of grad students, Shannon was short of money, and happy to be recruited by his professor, Vannevar Bush, to tend Bush's unwieldy mechanical computing device - the Differential Analyser.
Encouraged by Bush to base his master's thesis on the logical operation of the Differential Analyser, Shannon inevitably considered ways of improving it, perhaps by using electrical circuits instead of the present cumbersome collection of mechanical parts.
Not long afterwards, it dawned on Shannon that the boolean algebra he'd learned as an undergraduate was in fact very similar to an electric circuit.

The Modern History of Computing (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
The Difference Engine consisted entirely of mechanical components — brass gear wheels, rods, ratchets, pinions, etc. Numbers were represented in the decimal system by the positions of 10-toothed metal wheels mounted in columns.
Mechanical analog devices based on the wheel-and-disc integrator were in use during World War I for gunnery calculations.
Subsequently, Bush and his colleagues replaced the wheel-and-disc integrators and other mechanical components by electromechanical, and finally by electronic, devices.
