The Sheema race was important because Bushenyi District, and Ankole region, are the areas which are most representative of Uganda.
Bushenyi has quite many well-to-do farmers and small traders, and its sons and daughters are some of the richest people in Kampala too.
During the Obote II period, the "UPC Conc" vs "UPC regular (or science as it was at times called)" signalled the beginning of a irreversible national split and weakening of the party's hold on power, which ended in the July 1985 coup.

The Ankole people of southwest Uganda are almost 2.5 million in number, mainly living in three districts –; Mbarara, Bushenyi, and Ntungamo.
In April, though, of this year (2003), after a focused period of seeking direction from the Lord, our team began visiting villages in southwest Bushenyi district, praying for God to soften the hearts of the people there.
We feel that God is leading us to the sub-county of Burere in Bushenyi, though we don’t know specifically where and when.

 When the world turns upside down
The pilot project for CBP is in Bushenyi District, in the south-west of the country where community-based planning is being targeted at the parish level so that villagers can identify their needs, with plans then being incorporated in sub-county and district plans.

Bushenyi milk farmers mid last week staged a strike protesting double taxation by Bushenyi-Ishaka town council.
The farmers later charged and invaded the offices of the town council to get a bicycle belonging to their colleague which had been taken by council guards, but were intercepted by the guards.
The striking farmers were later addressed by the Deputy Resident District Bushenyi Sendegeya Charles.

When National Public Radio reported a year ago on the community health plan in Uganda’s Bushenyi district, the story began with the 20 kilometer ride up the dirt track to Buhweyju, an impoverished hilltop village of tea growers and subsistence farmers.
On the table in one room is an old military-style radio linking the clinic to the larger facility in Bushenyi and the taxi driver contracted to fetch serious cases down for treatment.
Before its creation, some people would not have been treated until it was too late, reluctant to make the day-long trip to town and afraid of the expense of the taxi ride and medical fees.

A district guidance and empowerment network for people living with HIV/AIDS has been launched in Bushenyi district to advocate for the rights of those living with HIV/AIDS and to create awareness about the benefits of positive living.
The ceremony was held at Katungu Mothers Union centre on Monday.
The national coordinator, Maj. Rubaramira Ruranga urged medical personnel in Bushenyi to assist HIV-positive mothers access drugs so that they produce children free of HIV.

It was sometimes unsettling to see the dilapidated redbrick and concrete school buildings in lush and beautiful surroundings.

THE Mbarara district education officer (DEO), Dan Tamwesigire, has recommended anti-Aids campaigner Patrick Donald Oucha to campaign in Bushenyi, reports Frank Mugabi.
In a March 14 letter to the Bushenyi DEO, Tamwesigire said, "Oucha covered 45 schools in Mbarara district.
His campaign has had a tremendous impact on pupils, students and the community.
