bustituted (rode on buses) for part of the journey, and schedules changed.
In Britain, the term is therefore often used to describe a cost-cutting device implying closure of minor railway routes which struggle to remain financially viable, thereby releasing funds for the maintenance of main lines and London commuter routes.
bustitution primarily describes an ad hoc response to a temporary problem on the railway.

Regrettably, the guidance once again raises the spectre of bustitution and makes clear that in addition to the money which could be saved by closure the potential value of the land which could be sold as a result of closure should be taken into account by the cost -benefit analysis.
Commenting on the procedures with specific regard to bustitution the highly respected Rail Business Intelligence journal recently said: "the fundamental problem is an underlying assumption that buses, which obviously incur negligible infrastructure costs, are in principle as good as the rail services they replace.
The danger is that bustitution will inevitably emerge as the cheapest option for a substantial proportion of the network as the noose tightens".

Thruway Motorcoach is Amtrak's system of buses and contracts with local bus and taxi services to connect train stations to areas not served by railroads.
Sometimes these services replace trains (derisively called "bustitution") rather than providing access to areas not served by rail.
Passengers may only travel on Amtrak's network of thruway motorcoaches when connecting to or from an Amtrak train.

And the one on bustitution, written by the bruiser in the Department for Transport, Tony McNulty, is very clear about the intentions of the government to encourage the cutting back of train services.
That duty, which had been set out in previous legislation, is not contained in the new Railways Act, an omission that may well be deliberate and significant, and one which suggests that the railways are not necessarily safe in Labour’s hands.
In a rational world, bustitution would be sensible if it were genuinely part of an integrated service, as it is in Switzerland.

It sparked an outcry from many communities that would lose their rail services, many of which (especially in the case of rural communities) provided the sole means of public transport.
The government argued that many of the rail services could be provided more cheaply by buses, and in a policy known as "bustitution", promised that any abandoned rail services would have their place taken by a replacement bus service, although this policy proved unsuccessful.
The assumption at the time was that car owners would drive to the nearest railhead (which was usually the junction where the closed branch line would otherwise have taken them) and journey onwards by train, but in practice having once left home in their cars, they used them for the whole journey.

However, most of the bustitutions I have come across have either been unadvertised or at least poorly advertised or done at such short notice that altering your plans is not feasible.
The point I was meaning was basically regarding short or no-notice bustitutions or cases where you have (for example) passed up the offer of a lift of decided to go for the train rather than drive.
As I mentioned above, I was under the impression that the 'fixed' costs were compensated - this may well no longer be the case or I may have misunderstood when I originally learned this.
