A platypus is an Australian monotreme, and hence is native to the southern hemisphere (as the beaver is to the north).
The busy beaver function may be thought of as seeking the maximum number of 1's that can be printed for a given number of states.
Analagously to the busy beaver case, we also consider the minimum number of transitions required to print m 1's; we denote this function as the weary wombat, or ww(n), which is the minimum number of state transitions made by a terminating machine which prints n 1's.

  Beaver Management
Beaver parents are quite protective of their young, and the kits often stay with the parents for two years, after which they disperse to find their own territories.
The beavers we see in the mainstem of the Chena River, which appears to be impossible to dam, are probably either dispersing young who have not yet found a territory, or adult males that have moved from their home lodges while kits are young.
Beaver populations have rebounded throughout North America, and beavers often conflict with humans because their dams create ponds that flood roads and trees, and because they cut down and eat trees that humans prefer to be left standing.

 Busy beaver
A busy beaver (from the colloquial expression for "industrious person") is a Turing machine that, when given an initially empty tape (a string of only 0's), does a lot of work, then halts.
At the moment the record 6-state Busy Beaver is over 10^865 (that is a 1 with 865 zeros) ones produced, using over 10^1730 steps.
There is an analog to to the Sigma function for Minsky machines[?], namely the largest number which can be present in any register on halting, for a given number of instructions.

Good Math has moved to ScienceBlogs: Busy Beavers
There are actually real competitions to see who can build the best busy beaver program.
Here's the question that the simplest version of the busy beaver problem wants to answer: Given a binary turing machine (that is a machine whose tape can have only the characters 0 and 1) with N states, what is the longest string of 1s that can be generated by a halting program?
There are numerous variations on the busy beaver problem: versions for turing machines with more symbols on the input tape; versions where the goal is to run for the most execution steps before halting; versions for other computing systems; etc.

The Busy Beaver Problem : A NEW MILLENNIUM ATTACK
Comprehension of the Busy Beaver problem requires a conceptual understanding of what a turing machine is and does.
The definition of the Busy Beaver problem defined above makes no reference to the nature of the tape after the machine has halted beyond strictly the number of 1's that are present.
A variant of the problem enforces the additional restriction that a machine can not be considered a Busy Beaver candidate unless the resulting pattern of 1's on the tape is in a contiguous sequence with the read head located at the left-most 1.

 Busy Beaver Turing Machine
Uhing was looking for a particular Turing machine dubbed a "busy beaver," which satisfies the condition: If a Turing machine has five possible states, what is the largest number of ones it can print on a blank tape (all zeros to start with) before coming to a stop?
It is now known that a three-state busy beaver writes six ones before it halts; a four-state busy beaver writes 13 ones.
However, Uhing doesn't know yet whether his machine is the long-sought busy beaver because other five-state machines may exists that print out even more ones.

At present, their most productive seven-state (4-tuple) Busy Beaver candidate prints 164 *'s after 23,197 transitions.
Most published work on the Busy Beaver problem has focussed on 5-tuple Turing machines (that is, Turing machines that both write a symbol and move at each state transition), rather than 4-tuple Turing machines (which either write or move, but not both, at each state transition).
For example, using 5-tuple machines, a six-state Busy Beaver candidate has been found by J. Buntrock and H. Marxen that prints over 95 million *'s before halting--after 8 quadrillion (8 x 10^15) state transitions.
