More than four years ago, California State Parks purchased a beautiful property containing extensive redwood forest land along Gazos Creek on the San Mateo County Coast, as an addition to Butano State Park.
This 120-acre property includes a stand of old growth redwoods that are used by the secretive seabird as nesting habitat, which State Parks intended to protect and conserve with this purchase.
State parks has leased 12 acres of the Gazos Creek property, for many years a summer camp, to the Pescadero Conservation Alliance.

Butano State Park is just about 15 miles south of Half Moon Bay, We'd tried to hike at Butano State Park back in May or June, but were rained out.
Looking at a park map, pars of the fire road are actually outside the park boundaries.
There are quite a few other trails in the park which bear exploring, so I'll probably return to this park in the future.

Big Basin is the largest stand of ancient redwoods south of San Francisco and was the first state park established in California.
This road crosses a small amount of private property (tree farms) and then enters the nearby Butano State Park.
Once we reached Sand Point, we were back in the main part of the park and the familiar ride back to park headquarters.

It begins a half mile from the park entrance, past the Mill Ox Trail, and before the campground.
Parking at one of the beaches or at Sky Londa cuts down the mileage if you want to do a brick workout when you get to Butano State Park.

Park in a small lot just south of the ranch, on the west side of the highway.

The heart of the park is a deep redwood canyon.
After you enter the park, look for the trailhead on the canyon floor on the left, with a dirt pullout area along the road for parking.
To make this trip work, park at the visitor center at the park entrance, and then ride your bike back out of the park to Cloverdale Road.

Committee for Green Foothills and other groups appealed a proposed research station in Butano State Park to the Coastal Commission because of concerns that year-round activities at this sensitive location could adversely affected the endangered bird, as well as habitats of other species.
The property where the research station is proposed was acquired by California State Parks in 2001 as an addition to Butano State Park.
Under the San Mate County Local Coastal Plan (LCP) and State Coastal Act, the burden of proof is upon the applicant to demonstrate that there will not be any significant impact on sensitive habitats, including the nesting sites of marbled murrelets.

Directions for Butano State Park 1) Take 84 west heading towards La Honda 2) Once in La Honda continue on 84 until you reach Pescadero Road (about 1mi from downtown La Honda).
If you continue straight ahead you will end up on Alpine Road, so veer right to remain in Pescadero.
5) Follow Cloverdale Road until you see a sign pointing you into the park on your left-hand side.
