Butaritari was the site of the famous "Carlson Raid" in which US marine commandos landed from the submarine Nautilus II in rubber boats and slaughtered the hapless aviators as they slept (see Central Pacific.
The plane rotting in the bay next to Butaritari Village Coop was one of the Japanese flying boats which was in for repair at the time the Americans landed.
The U.S. task force, composed of four battleships, four cruisers, three escort carriers, transports and destroyers, approached Butaritari Atoll from the southeast on the morning of November 20, 1943 (see a description in the history of the battleship USS Pennsylvania).

On Butaritari I lived a very special experience that I suspect is not equalled in many other places in the world, a culture where human interaction and co-operation exists to the degree long banished from our existence..
On Butaritari I participated in a culture with no electricity, no running water, no money, little variety of food, and a people that spend most of their day laughing and joking in meeting, talking, dancing and singing with their fellow man. Somehow I think there is a story here.
Butaritari island was not an arbitrary choice on which to spend the majority of my trip.It is one of the lushest of the “out islands” due to good rainfall.

Also part of Kiribati, Butaritari is the Northernmost atoll in the Gilbert group and our second and last stop in Kiribati.
There were 3 other sailboats at Butaritari when we arrived, all of which we had met at Tarawa the previous week.
The Japanese occupied Butaritari in the 1930s and kept possession of it until US forces removed them from the atoll (and all of the Gilbert Islands) in 1942 after taking Tarawa to the South.

As for internet on Butaritari, all the hardware is there and ready to be put to use, yet, everytime I ask about when it will be ready they tell me that next week "the guy" will come.

Remains believed to be from a group of 18 U.S. Marines killed in action on Butaritari Island during World War II's Makin Atoll Raid in August, 1942, will be repatriated at a ceremony on Hickam Air Force Base, at 3 p.m.
The Marines were from the famous 2nd Raider Battalion, and the remains are believed to include those of Sgt. Clyde Thomason, the first enlisted Marine awarded the Medal of Honor during World War II.
According to CILHI officials, the recovery of remains on Butaritari represents the largest and potentially the most significant to date.
