  Metroactive Music | Butch Morris
Born out of a desire to bring a structural flexibility to large-ensemble interaction, Morris uses a codified vocabulary of 18 gestures or hand signals to sculpt a "music of collective imagination." His system provides a focus for the musicmaking, yet it frees modern improvisers from the predetermined constrictions of the written page.
Morris' inchoate conduction theories were substantially inspired by his involvement in the all-night "energy orchestra" blowouts of New York City's loft scene in the mid-'70s.
Morris seems to channel and interconnect the primordial elements of earth, air, fire and water into an imagistic, almost video game-like animation.

Lawrence Butch Morris | Hot 103 Live
Morris first became known as a lyrical, round-toned (if roughly hewn) free jazz cornetist.
As his career progressed, his cornet playing took a back seat to his bandleading; Morris invented a style of organized group improvisation that's been dubbed "Comprovisation," an elision of composition and improvisation.
Morris' organization relied on a conducting technique that he calls "Conduction." Conduction is basically a manner of shaping an improvised performance by using hand signals (an idea that was expanded upon by the lesser-known New York saxophonist/composer Walter Thompson).

CD Review of Lawrence D. 'Butch' Morris - Conduction 38/39/40 on New World Records @ jazzreview.com
Butch Morris is a cornetist, composer & improvisor who has led diverse ensembles of musicians from all over the globe in what he has termed "conduction" - conducted improvisation.
(Morris has also played, recorded & collaborated with David Murray and Wayne Horvitz.) The results are (for elastic-minded listeners) often unpredictable and exhilarating.
Morris directs an amazing, international cast of players: Myra Melford (piano); Zeena Parkins (electric harp); Hans Koch (reeds); Tristan Honsinger (cello); William Parker & Fred Hopkins (bass); Reggie Nicholson & Brian Carrott (vibes) - but the "spotlight" is on the totality of the music itself.

 Butch Morris Conduction #139
The selection of compositions made for an appropriate elegy in their shared theme of mortality, but the impetus for Morris to eulogize his brother and friend with a piece of Induction material is interesting also, for the Induction process is what inspired Morrisís subsequent efforts in Conduction.
Against this rhythmic theme, Morris called forth hard orchestral hits syncopated against the drums, before melting the orchestra into the bottomless sea of harmony, founded upon the tonal constancy of the horns and synthesizer, that would provide the base for much of the work, lending it the decidedly oceanic quality that framed its emotive themes.
This process is what allows the band to move from sharp staccatos to subtle staccatos, to the elegance of a solo arpeggiated piano, alone and resigned, as though giving oneself over and then mourning the loss of self, while strings draw forth the longing, and the loss, and washes of melody are fond remembrances.

What Morris accomplishes is a work so vast in its tonal spaces and colors, the recording can barely contain it.
In Morris' egoless conduction, new tone poems and symphonies are being structurally erected as multilingual towers of expression and collective architecture where tonality is the bendable surface from which the foundation emerges.
There are no records like Butch Morris' conduction sides, nor could there be, though he wishes there were.

This 53-minute work -- in three titled movements -- is played on cornet by Morris; trombone, flute, and a myriad of electronic devices by Deane; and Ninh using every kind of metallic instrument he can get his hands on.
In "Ozone-Burning Red," Morris takes the lead with long, whispered lines almost rolling out of his cornet and Deane uses an electronic backdrop to illuminate his playing before entering with a trombone, while Ninh shimmers cymbals and gongs with his fingers and brushes to illustrate the solemnity of the collective's purpose.

Music - Dust to Dust Lawrence D. "Butch" Morris / CD / 1990
Lawrence "Butch" Morris' conduction technique, a form of directed improvisation whereby musicians follow a variety of live hand signals by the conductor to shape and reshape both notated and non-notated music, has not taken on the revered status of Ornette Coleman's harmolodic method of free improvisation, but has produced equally exciting music.
If his conceptions were amateurish, Morris' "songs" would pale in comparison to any of the high-end work Coleman has produced, but, as is the case with Dust to Dust, the pieces come out sounding whole and refined, enhanced greatly by a variety of impromptu musical twists.
The pieces range from the spacious and pastoral-sounding "Via Talciona" and "Othello A" (with the harp parts faintly evoking Japanese koto music) to the more tightly wound, atonal-minimalist "Bartok Comprovisation," which is insistently moved along by repetitive figures played on the piano and a variety of electronic instruments.
