Buzzards are found over the whole world with the exception of the Australian region, and have been split into many genera by systematists.
The honey-buzzard (Pernis apivorus), a summer-visitor from the south, and breeding, or attempting to breed, yearly in the New Forest, does not come into the subfamily Buteoninae, but is probably the type of a distinct group, Perninae, of which there are other examples in Africa and Asia.
In America the name " buzzard " is popularly given to the turkey-buzzard or turkey-vulture (Cathartes Aura).

AGE AND SEX DIFFERENCES IN SIZE OF SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS
However, the European Sparrow Hawk (A. nisus) appears to show no change in wing length with age, and in the Levant Sparrow Hawk (A. brevipes), adults appear to have longer tails than juveniles.
The available data suggest that juveniles of all species of Buteoninae have shorter wings and longer tails than the adults, with the exception of the sea eagles (Haliaeetus, data from three species) in which the juveniles have both longer wings and tails than the adults.
Most Circininae also appear to fit the gener- alization of shorter wings and longer tails in juveniles than in adults, except possibly for the Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus), in which ju- veniles might have both shorter wings and tails than adults.
