Butler County was created on March 12, 1800 from part of Allegheny County and named in honor of General Richard Butler.
In the county, the population is spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 29.40% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.30% who are 65 years of age or older.
It was in Saxonburg, Butler County, that the designer of the Brooklyn Bridge, John Roebling, invented his revolutionary "wire rope." At what is now known as Oil Creek, Butler County resident William Smith and Edwin Drake first proved that oil counld be tapped from underground for consistent supply.

Most of the county is free from glacial drift; but the line of the Terminal Moraine may be traced near its N.W. boundary, from Harrisville to Centreville and Mechanicsburg and so into Lawrence County.
The 1st, 2d, and 3d oil sands of Venango county are in Butler county overlaid by a fourth oil sand, which the Butler drillers called of course their 1st.
Outside the main oil belt and south of Butler lay a pool of oil under high gas pressure until 1884, when it was tapped by the Thorn creek wells, one of which gushed at the rate of 10,000 or 12,000 barrels a day, while neighboring wells were dry.

Butler County might not seem like a place of rip-roaring adventure today, but back in the wilderness times circa 1770 and after, it was the scene of several movie-type thrillers.
While Butler residents had ideas for car designs, including the original Jeep, there never was a Henry Ford or the facilities here to produce the millions of cars the American public demanded over the years.
Residents, however, did have ingenuity and the willingness to try on their side, and by the end of the 1950s, Butler County had produced five different car lines that have added to this country's love affair with the motor vehicle.

A husband and wife were relaxing in a swimming pool, when at about 5:45 P.M. the man noticed in the eastern sky, a circular object that appeared to be of a dull gray metallic color.
At about 2:12 P.M. earlier this date, near Reading, PA in Berks County, a silver disk shaped object was reportedly seen as it moved off at a high rate of speed towards the South.
