Anniversary offers chance to dispel Butler myths | News crumb | EducationGuardian.co.uk
The 1944 act was to have a powerful influence for decades on schools in England and Wales and is still the yardstick by which major government education measures are judged - but many of the commonly known "facts" about it are wrong, according historian David Crook, of the University of London's Institute of Education.
Butler's act introduced secondary education for all at age 11 - previously children attended elementary school until 14 and only went onto secondary school if their parents could pay (or in very rare cases win a scholarship).
The 1944 act raised the school leaving age to 15 (achieved in 1947) and aimed to raise it 16 as soon as possible, although it was nearly 30 years before this happened.

The Butler Act was a 1925 law in the State of Tennessee that banned anyone from teaching evolution in a state-funded university, public school, or teacher training college.
Butler was a fan of fundamentalist congressional representative William Jennings Bryan, and his admiration for Bryan’s work contributed to Butler’s decision in 1922 to run as a Democrat for the State legislature.
AN ACT prohibiting the teaching of the Evolution Theory in all the Universities, Normals [teacher training colleges] and all other public schools of Tennessee, which are supported in whole or in part by the public school funds of the State, and to provide penalties for the violations thereof.

Butler's acceptance of the women to whom she spoke and her physical manifestations of sympathy, including hugging and holding women who were neither clean nor healthy, won her their confidence.
Butler began to research the lives of prostitutes, debunking prevalent prejudices that prostitutes were sexual predators and revealing the grinding and ineradicable economic pressures behind their trade.
Butler's campaign was actually one of the first feminists to cross the class line in her reforms, and one of the first to claim that sex is an overriding condition uniting women in their sympathies and responsibilities, despite all other differences.

The Folly of an Education Spending Race
Federal spending on education is fast becoming a reverse political "third rail." Rather than being an issue that politicians cannot touch--as Social Security was until recently--education spending is the issue that every politician feels compelled to embrace.
The story of education reform is much like the story of welfare reform: The government bodies and other institutions closest to the people have taken the initiative in deciding how to improve education.
With the upcoming re-authorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and Goals 2000, Members should consider allowing all interested states the maximum flexibility to administer most federal funds (in ESEA and other federal programs) on the programs that are best suited to their needs.

 FUNDING FOR ASSISTIVE
Special education is defined as "specially designed instruction, at no cost to the parent, to meet the unique needs of a student with disabilities with the necessary supplementary aids and related services needed for the student to benefit from his/her educational program in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)".
The legal presumption favors education for students with disabilities in regular schools with supplemental aids and services, and removal only when the cost is so great that doing so is not practicable.
While the terms "assistive technology devices and services" were not specifically used in the original act, they clearly would be a functional part of the services defined (e.g., a communication device to implement a goal as part of speech pathology services) and other developmental, corrective or supportive services.

Critics of bilingual education argue that: "The best way to tell a good bilingual education program from a bad one is to measure the amount of time in the school day a child spends being taught in English.
First, bilingual education comes in many forms and the development of program models depends upon the timing of the transition to English and, how much instruction should take place in each language.

Simplicius stresses the importance of a universal, "scientific" understanding of the Gods which, by abstracting from the particularity of one's position and achieving the viewpoint of Aristotelian epistêmê, which is always of the universal, purges the action of making offerings from misconceptions that would dispose the worshiper unethically in relation to the Gods.
The essential particularity of the domain of the ethical in Aristotle's thought is, however, also embodied in the act of making the offering, in which a particular human offers a particular item to a particular deity.
A merely "scientific" or universalizing viewpoint on the Gods is not sufficient: the practical dimension which involves the actual cult of particular deities is its necessary complement.
