The launch of the Shoreline Hotel, on the edge of one of the three remaining Butlins complexes, at Bognor Regis in West Sussex, is a move upmarket for a company built on holidays as cheap as chips.
Most of the rest of the empire that made Billy Butlin one of Britain's first working-class millionaires was sold off in the years before and after his death in 1980, and it dropped its handful of standalone hotels as part of a relaunch at the end of the 1990s.

We are a family of four (children's ages are 2,5 years and 11months) and stayed in a Silver appartment incl breakfast/dinner.I was sceptical at first, having heard mixed reports, most of which included the word 'tacky' at some point, but was convinced by the price...

When I was asked to try out the new spa experience in Butlins, Skegness, childhood memories came flooding back: donkey rides, bingo nights and my dad asleep in a deckchair with a knotted hanky on his head.
Butlins, which has made its name as an affordable family holiday resort with 3 UK locations in Skegness, Minehead and Bognor, has joined the spa revolution.
The Butlins Spa is open to day guests as well as residents - it was very quiet on the day I visited but I can imagine harassed mothers taking advantage of the babysitting facilities on site while grabbing some quiet time.
