He was elected district attorney of Butte county in 1875, and held the position for two terms, during which time his name became widely known because of his able prosecuti8on and conviction of the Chico rioters and murderers of 1877.
Upon reaching California, he struck out for the interior, to seek the “root of all evil,” and brought up in what is now Plumas county, then a party of Butte.
In 1853, he was elected sheriff of Butte county, to which office he was re-elected in 1855, at which time he resided at Bidwell’s bar, Plumas having been created from Butte in 1854.

He emigrated to American in 1856, and went to Madison county, Illinois, where he remained two years; after which time he came to the Pacific coast, arriving in Butte county in the fall of 1858.
He came to Butte county in October, 1877, and was foreman and local editor of the Butte County Register from November, 1877, until October of the following year, when he assumed the editorial and business management of the Oroville Mercury.
ROSE was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, May 14, 1844, and is a son of James and Margaret Rose pioneer settlers of the same county, his grandfather Rose being one of the first five occupants.
