Butthole Surfers are an American rock band, founded by Gibby Haynes and Paul Leary in San Antonio, Texas in 1981; the pair met while students at Trinity University.
The Butthole Surfers released their debut EP Brown Reason to Live in 1983 on Alternative Tentacles with provocative titles like "The Shah Sleeps in Lee Harvey's Grave" and "The Revenge of Anus Presley".
Butthole Surfers' legendary performances would draw fans of punk rock, performance art, and curiosity seekers as well as fans of more typical rock concerts.

Gibby Haynes began the Butthole Surfers' 1987 masterpiece Locust Abortion Technician with an exchange between father and son in which (before ending with a bombastic exhortation to Satan) he offered the advice, "it's better to regret something you have done than something you haven't done".
The Surfers have almost completely abandoned the standard guitar/bass/drums format in favor of what sounds like a band locked in a room with Cubase and (perhaps a dwindling supply of) mind-altering substances.
If the Surfers could somehow grow up enough to edit themselves while simultaneously tapping the destructive irreverence of their inner children, they might be on to something.

Today when he came home he played the Butthole Surfers, which was really cosmic because he doesn't ususally play the Butthole Surfers, and eleven years ago TO THE DAY I attended and reviewed one of the strangest concerts of my life by, you guessed it, the Butthole Surfers.
"Butthole Surfers" has frightened off radio airplay and prohibited reference to the group in family publications [I subsequently learned that "butthole surfer" is an old cross-country running term for when you slip and fall on very wet grass and go "butthole surfing," especially down a hill].
The Surfer's music and world view arose out of punk/psychedelic seeds nurtured in the soil of the Winter of Nihilism which bore a fruit psychologically tasting of Sartre's existentialism in which individuals are essentially isolated lumps of deteriorating flesh in a vast disconnected wasteland.

After two decades the Butthole Surfers are still the godfathers of punk rock in Texas.
The Surfers traveled in a Nova with a sawed-out back seat, lived as nomads, released a string of bizarre recordings, and according to drummer King Coffey, who joined the band in 1983, "hung close to Gibby because he was carrying the cash." Onstage they were at once intense, funny, and frightening.
If it's strange to see Disney releasing a Butthole Surfers album, it's stranger still that the album's first single, "Shame of Life," was co-written by multiplatinum metal rapper Kid Rock.

There was a time when the Butthole Surfers had a choice position in underground rock, as they twisted psychedelic noise and punk-metal to the brink of hardcore.
This is a Butthole surfers album to be sure, there's that Gibby sensibility to the oddball lyrics, there's still that Paul Leary guitar.
Only time will tell whether the Surfers have found a legitimate new direction for their music or an aesthetic dead end and I'll be there to find out.

Now the buzz-kill manager is gone, the grudge is forgotten and the Surfers' eleventh studio effort is decaying, but the stalemate with Capitol Records remains.
After emerging victorious from a legal battle with Touch and Go Records last year, the Surfers gained ownership and control of their earliest recordings -- some of which were not commercially available for more than a decade.
The new material will likely revisit the Surfers' early eccentricity and ditch the commercial magnetism of their hit single, "Pepper," which Leary calls a "totally unpleasant experience." A release date remains hypothetical at this time, but Leary says the band hopes to tour during the summer months -- one way or another.

Along with Sonic Youth and possibly Big Black, the Buttholes Surfers are by intelligent and knowledgeable music fans and critics, one the great under appreciated bands of the last forty years.
So far this is the only Surfers album I posses, (bought a few years back on the impact of that mutant cover shot), and on the strength of this record I'm going to have to hunt the earlier albums down.
This is the first Butthole Surfers recorded media I ever heard (because it was free on their website), and most of their studio stuff just hasn't lived up to the tracks on this live album.

From the first song to the last, the Surfers rarely fail to please my ears.
A couple songs on the album ("my brothers wife", "lets talk about cars") are just plain strange, but it adds to the uniqueness of the band.

The title of the Butthole Surfers' latest release can certainly be applied to the band itself: their musical noodlings have definitely been part of the weird revolution in music, freaking out the "normal" musicians.
The album however doesn't live up to its name, though there are sparks of the Surfers' genius floating about.
I do think the Surfers are still being creative and inventive, but perhaps they've gotten too comfortable in their niche.

Leary says he learned all his insights into the producer's art the hard way, through having to record 10-12 years' worth of Butthole Surfers records either on the sly or something close to it, simply out of necessity.
The only producer I'd ever worked with was John Paul Jones [who produced the Butthole Surfers' major label debut, Independent Worm Saloon], and he's really an old rock star.
Other than that, it would have been nice to have worked with producers, to know what the job's really supposed to be.

I love the butthole surfers I went out to Texas to see them on my own in 2001 and 2002 which made the few weeks I spent there the best holidays ever (Besides when I went to Las Vegas to get married this year, obviously that surpasses the Buttholes, but… only just!)
Years ago af riend of mine gave me a mixtape filled with the Ventures, Dick and Dale, and this one incredible song by the Butthole Surfers called “John E. Smoke” from their album Hairway to Steven.
The Butthole's live shows were at times terrifying, and their early albums were challenging, exhilarating, and utterly unique, making them a long shot to ever ink a major-label deal.
