The buttonquails or hemipodes are a small family of birds which resemble, but are unrelated to, the true quails.
Buttonquail were traditionally placed in Gruiformes or Phasianidae (the crane and pheasant orders).
The Sibley-Ahlquist taxonomy elevated them to ordinal status as the Turniciformes and basal to other Neoaves either because their accelerated rate of molecular evolution exceeded the limits of sensitivity of DNA-DNA hybridization or because the authors did not perform the appropriate pairwise comparisons or both.

Dennis Yong was with them and I believe the Small Buttonquail is species no. 495 for his Big Bird Year.

Distribution The Luzon Buttonquail (see Remarks 1) is endemic to Luzon in the Philippines, where records have been mainly or entirely derived from bird-catchers taking within-island migrants, so that the true range and indeed habitat of the species remain obscure; the guess by Dickinson et al.
Although grassland areas may be increasing in Luzon it cannot be assumed that this is in any way beneficial to this buttonquail, which may prove to have specific ecological requirements not met by the creation of pastures or cropland through forest clearance.
It seems inconceivable that five forms of buttonquail should have evolved on Luzon in the absence of original areas of grassland, given that four of them are known grassland dwellers.

As a result of habitat degradation, this elusive grassland specialist qualifies as Vulnerable on the grounds that its small range (where it is known from few locations) and single population are likely to be declining.
These birds were in some way associating with Red-backed Buttonquail Turnix maculosa and Blue-breasted Quail Coturnix chinensis (Sutter 1955), and presumably resource partitioning in these species is related to bill morphology: the heavy bill of the Sumba Buttonquail would be used for larger seeds.
The Sumba Buttonquail is one of (now) three threatened members of the suite of seven bird species that are entirely restricted to the "Sumba Endemic Bird Area", threats and conservation measures in which are profiled by Sujatnika et al.

 Plains-Wanderer
Olson and Steadman (1981), however, studied its anatomy and behavior, and this research, along with the results of DNA-DNA hybridization, showed that it actually is a Charadriiforme (like the phalarope) and that its closest relative may be the South American seedsnipes (Thinocoridae).
The female Plains-Wanderer (right) has a collar of fl-and-white, and a rusty blotch on the breast (not shown here; this was possibly a young female as her coloration was fairly muted).
I've already noted the resemblance to buttonquails when the bird is crouching among the light cover on the barren plains it inhabits, but it is a much stranger beast when standing up or running (below).
