This was the birth of Wallstreet and it came about when 24 of New York’s merchants secretly met two months before to discuss ways to bring security to their companies and prevent their competitors - the auctioneers from getting their business.
These merchants signed a document named the Buttonwood Agreement, named after their usual meeting place - a buttonwood tree.
The agreement meant that the signers could only trade their securities among themselves.
