Topic: Butyraldehyde

 [No title]
Butyraldehyde is released to the environment from facilities that manufacture and use it.
Butyraldehyde has been detected in exhaust emissions from diesel engines (0.08 microliters/L), in gaseous emissions from fireplaces burning jack pine or red oak logs (0.010 to 0.901 g/kg), at hazardous waste sites (an average concentration of 130 ppb in soil, water, and waste samples), and in mother's milk.
Rats exposed by inhalation to butyraldehyde concentrations of 2710 mg/m3 (934 ppm) for 6 hours/day, 5 days/week, for 20 exposures had oral discharge and increased adrenal and lung weights; no effects were seen at 930 mg/m3 (320 ppm) (U.S. 1989b).

The laboratory studies showed that butyraldehyde becomes a more significant component of the headspace as the solutions aged and could indicate a higher potential for exposure to this aldehyde when handling waste developer solutions." (Scobbie et al, 1996, p 433).).
It is likely that hand-mixing of chemicals, as was frequent in the past, could give rise to relatively high concentrations of these substances during the short time required for dispensing and dilution with water.
The spent developer appears to be enriched in butyraldehyde but not enough is known about the health effects of this material to be able to judge its effect." (p 434).

Butyraldehyde Fact Sheet (CAS No. 123-72-8) Chemicals can be released to the environment as a result of their manufacture, processing, and use.
Butyraldehyde is produced in very large amounts (almost 2 billion pounds in 1992) by five companies in the United States.
Effects of butyraldehyde on human health and the environment depend on how much butyraldehyde is present and the length and frequency of exposure.

Butyraldehyde is a colorless, volatile liquid that is easily distinguished by its characteristic odor.
Butyraldehyde degrades rapidly in water with a half life of 2-20 days, although the majority of it will evaporate before degradation takes place.
However, butyraldehyde is highly corrosive and has been known to affect the lining of the nose and lungs in animals and can adversely affect the lining of the stomach with repeated exposure.

 Phthalates - Plasticisers Information Centre
It is the phthalate ester of the alcohol 2-ethyl hexanol, which is normally manufactured by the dimerisation of butyraldehyde, the butyraldehyde itself being synthesised from propylene.
The "oxo" route differs from the 2-ethylhexanol route in that the alcohol for subsequent esterification is produced through the carbonylation of an alkene (olefin) rather than the dimerisation of butyraldehyde.
The carbonylation process acts to add a carbon unit to an alkene chain by reaction with carbon monoxide and hydrogen with temperature, pressure and catalyst.
