BUTYRIC ACID [butyric acid] or butanoic acid, CH H, viscous, foul-smelling, liquid carboxylic acid; m.p.
It is a low molecular weight fatty acid that is present in butter as an ester of glycerol; the odor of rancid butter is due largely to the presence of free butyric acid.
Butyric acid is used in the manufacture of plastics.

National Abortion Federation: Clinic Violence: Butyric Acid Attacks
Butyric acid is a clear, colorless liquid with an unpleasant, rancid, vomit-like odor.
The goal of introducing butyric acid into a clinic is to disrupt services, close the clinic, and harass patients and staff.
Depending on the amount used and how it is introduced into the clinic, butyric acid can cause thousands of dollars of damage, requiring clinics to replace carpeting, furniture, and conduct extensive cleanup of the facility.

Butyric acid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Butyric acid is a fatty acid occurring in the form of esters in animal fats and plant oils.
Normal butyric acid or fermentation butyric acid is also found as a hexyl ester in the oil of Heracleum giganteum (cow parsnip) and as an octyl ester in parsnip (Pastinaca sativa); it has also been noticed in the fluids of the flesh and in perspiration.
The acid is an oily colorless liquid that solidifies at -8 °C; it boils at 164 °C. It is easily soluble in water, ethanol and ether, and is thrown out of its aqueous solution by the addition of calcium chloride.

Fatty Acids - Chemical and Physical Structure
Butyric acid is a saturated fat, which means that all the carbon bonds in the middle of the chain are "filled" with hydrogen.
In butyric acid and other saturated fats, each of the carbon atoms in the middle of the chain is bonded with two hydrogen atoms.
The acid end of the molecule is called the "alpha", and its opposite is the "omega" end.

GABA is a natural calming and anti-epileptic agent in the brain that is manufactured from the amino acid glutamine and glucose.
Since GABA does not cross the blood-brain barrier very well (i.e., it cannot be transported efficiently into the brain from the bloodstream), virtually all of the GABA found in the brain is manufactured there.

Butyric acid, a common ingredient in vomit and foot sweat, for example, evokes an unpleasant reaction from volunteers—unless they "have been clued to think about food," Dalton says.
Butyric acid is also present in certain strong cheeses, and when volunteers developed expectations of food, they typically found the odor more bearable, she says.
As for the least tolerable smells, the team's research suggests that the smell of "organic decomposition"—rotting flesh and organic decay—is the most universally reviled.
