Buvuma Island (locally 'Uvuma') is the map name of what is actually a chain of more than fifty smaller islands, a few kilometres off the northern shore of Lake Victoria, Uganda in the Napoleon Gulf.
The main island is Buvuma, with a land area of around 200 square-miles, and a population of around 20,000.
The Miocene floras of Rusinga and Mfwanganu islands are subject to a long-term study by paleobotanists.

The Buvuma Islands have traditionally been quite isolated from the rest of Uganda and services to the local population by the Government have been very limited for many reasons, such as the poor infrastructure and communications.
In 1999 a second base was opened on Namiti island, which is another 20 miles/2 hrs further into the Lake, and is now operating with four permanent staff members, enabling the project to serve a greater proportion of the local population.
Living conditions on the islands are basic: there is no running water or electricity, although solar panels have recently been installed to provide electricity to run office equipment.

Rome (Fides Service) - A new school has been opened on Buvuma island on Lake Victoria, where the people, about 20,000, are mostly fishermen and food is scarce.
The school was built by Swedish and Ugandan students in only four weeks.
The new school was opened in the last week of July with a Mass celebrated by Father Anatoli, parish priest at Buvuma and the only priest on the island.
