BuyMusic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
BuyMusic is a paid online music store run by Buy.com.
The store was launched in July 2003 with 300,000 tracks available [1] and was designed to compete with iTunes Music Store because at the time of launch, Apple's store was limited to the Macintosh users, and BuyMusic was the first to offer paid downloads to non-Mac users.
The site has provided no stats regarding the number of customers and downloads, yet Scott Blum, the founder and CEO of BuyMusic, noted "We're nowhere near Apple's iTunes Music Store numbers." in a December 2003 interview.

BuyMusic.com beats Apple to PC buyers
BuyMusic founder Scott Blum called Apple CEO Steve Jobs "a visionary, but he's on the wrong platform." While Apple users constitute about 3 percent of the personal computer market, BuyMusic is targeting the 97 percent of people with PCs.
BuyMusic, which is based in Aliso Viejo, Calif., will vie for a share of a market with such online music subscription services as pressplay, Rhapsody, MusicNow and MusicNet, which have not managed to cull substantial customer traffic from the free file-sharing networks.
By year's end, BuyMusic and the other PC-based digital music retailers are expected to face a competing PC version of iTunes, which has had more than 6.5 million songs downloaded to date.

 BuyMusic - E-mail to a friend - Software - ZDNet Reviews
Although BuyMusic claims that its secure WMA files can be transferred to select portable devices (the way iTunes Music Store customers can listen to purchased music using an iPod), the files we downloaded would not play on portables, even the Creative Zen NX, which BuyMusic recommends.
On the plus side, starting in April 2004, BuyMusic will offer up to 10 free downloads to customers who purchase a Rio Karma, Nitrus, Cali, Chiba, or Fuse, so if you have one of these players, rest assured that you'll be able to listen to BuyMusic tracks.
While BuyMusic does a good job of making the process as seamless as possible, it still can't hold a candle to iTunes' ease of use.

BuyMusic visitors should have a clear sense of what they would like to download.
BuyMusic allows users to search by artist, album or song and offers a variety of categories to click through.
BuyMusic may have limited appeal for people who enjoy a specific song, but do not want to spend the extra cost to purchase an album, but the site is so clunky, so user-unfriendly that I would recommend that you delay joining until Apple's iTunes does Windows.

BuyMusic, based in Aliso Viejo, California, will vie for a share of a market with a handful of online music services, including pressplay, Rhapsody, MusicNow and MusicNet, which have not managed to cull substantial customer traffic from the free file-sharing networks.
BuyMusic downloads are in Microsoft's Windows Media format, and it suffers from some of the same licensing drawbacks that the other PC-based digital music retailers have.
Still, BuyMusic's entry into the online music market will be good for the entire sector because it will encourage other digital music retailers to go back to the record companies and negotiate less restrictive terms of use for the music, said Phil Leigh, an analyst with Raymond James & Associates.

Buymusic offers 500,000 plus music titles, but they only offer 19 out of 24 genres that we look for.
Buymusic doesn’t provide some of the features we look for in music download services, like a playlist organizer, music videos and download extras.
Buymusic offers genuinely good support through an army of FAQs, a technical support manual and an online form that allows you to send emails to the company’s tech support team.

Speaking of music, the other night I finally did some biz with buymusic — I downloaded 3 songs.
I found that even after I downloaded and upgraded WM 9 on my machine there were still some “digital rights” that needed to be synchronized, which I assumed to be the security process that identifies my computer to those three songs so that they can only be downloaded on this one machine.
Overall, the selection of buymusic is good, the quality is substandard and the process of retrieving your purchased songs (one at a time) is not refined.

The BuyMusic service allows users to legally download songs and albums from a variety of genres across the entire commercial and alternative musical spectrum.

Buy.com has launched its BuyMusic service that makes 300,000 songs available for download for as little as $0.79 per song and $7.95 per album.
What BuyMusic's DRM may lack in consistency it gains in flexibility, at least as far as artists and labels are concerned.
These different DRM restrictions shouldn't be too complex for mainstream users to wrap their hands around, and I'm all for them, as long as the additional freedom encourages more labels and artists to participate in download services like BuyMusic.com.
