JapanCorner - The Benihana Guide to Japan
Nihon buyoh is classical Japanese dance in which the dancer wears a kimono selected for the particular performance and often times uses such props as the sensu (folding fan) and tenugui (a length of cotton cloth).
Odori is very similar to nihon buyoh in that it is lively and colorful and is the type of dance most typically associated with kabuki; while mai is much more static and is performed in noh theater.
Geisha are trained to become proficient in these various dance forms, however nihon buyoh and odori tend to be the most popular.

Using the body to create a grotesque body language of dance Ankoku Butoh, literally meaning "Dance of Utter Darkness" was a mockery and yet also a continuation of the traditional Japanese dance Buyoh, a dance steeped in the agricultural rituals of pre-modern Japan.
Butoh performers took their inspiration from using the body to create horror as opposed to the creation of beauty in Buyoh and traditional Western dance.
Probably the concept of beauty had a different meaning for Hijikata whose sister was sold into prostitution and who lived in poverty for most of his early life.

"Buyoh" is the ascendant, like the vertical ascent of Nijinsky or Isadora Duncan's leap toward the source of light, "Butoh" is a descent".
Tatsumi Hijikata says, "We shake hands with (he dead, who send us encouragement from beyond our body; this is the unlimited power of Butoh..something is hiding in our subconscious - collected in our unconscious body, which will appear in each detail of our expression." "Butoh belongs both to life and death.

I teach movement at an acting school, work as a voice actor/narrator, and produce and create for my own theater group, Kee Company.
I occasionally perform with other theater companies, and study noh and nihon buyoh.
I also like to go the theater a lot, go hiking (not often enough by far!), ride my bike around Tokyo, go dancing (also not often enough), and hang out in bookstores in Jimbocho.

At this year’s event, musician and freelance TV postproduction sound engineer Yasushi Yoshida - stage name Yasuski – presented a piece based on the ancient Japanese tale Genji Monogatari – a novel written in the 11th Century by Murasaki Shikibu of the Heian royal court.
After the performance, there was a discussion with journalists from various publications - one of whom said he enjoyed it so much he wanted to hear it again right away.
