 BUZĂU COUNTY
Buzau County is situated in the S-E of Romania, between 44 44’- 45 49’northern latitude and 26 04’-27 26’ eastern longitude.
Buzau County combines harmoniously all the relief forms: in the North, one can see the Mountains of Buzau; in the South there is the plain, part of the Romanian Plain, and in the centre, there is a region of hills with orchards.
In Buzau were founded and functioned cultural associations and groupings, from which we mention, the Atheneum subsidiary, in 1893; the first teachers association “Solidarity” (1882), the germ of the national association; literary, musical and scientific groupings, making of Buzau an important centre among the cultural centres in the country.

Initially held in reserve, it crossed the river Bug on the Polish-Soviet frontier on June 23, 1941 behind the 44.Infanterie-Division (Later known as the Reichsgrenadier Division Hoch- und Deutschmeister, it was from Austria, and would be destined to be destroyed at Stalingrad in early 1943).
After heavy fighting, in which SS-Div.Wiking and the 370.Infanterie.Division were also engaged, across rugged terrain that was almost impossible for any motorized vehicles to negotiate, through extensive minefields and under constant attack by Soviet fighter bombers, the division took the town on September 27, 1942.
This advance, like the one along the right bank of the Terek, was severely hampered by the difficult terrain (many small rivers had to be forded), minefields, heavy artillery barrages, as well as constant attacks by Soviet bombers and fighter bombers.
