NOVA Online | Tales from the Hive | The Buzz About Bees
Bees often shield themselves from rain, which can chill their flight muscles to the point that they cannot fly.
Bees are not fast fliers; while their wings beat over 11,000 cycles per minute, their flight speed averages only 15 miles per hour.
The bee leaves the stinger and venom pouch behind and soon dies due to abdominal rupture.

Bee Decline May Spell End of Some Fruits, Vegetables   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Bees, via pollination, are responsible for 15 to 30 percent of the food U.S. consumers eat.
The honeybee decline, which is affecting domesticated and wild bee populations around the world, is mostly the result of diseases spread as a result of mites and other parasites as well as the spraying of crops with pesticides, scientists say.
White varroa mites (bottom, shown in a bee cell) are one of the primary causes of the honeybee decline.

Her tenants are blue orchard bees (Osmia lignaria), one of 4,000 native U.S. species that scientists classify as "solitary bees." Unlike the more familiar honeybees--imported from Europe--which tend to defend their nests aggressively, these widespread bees have no hive to defend.
Solitary bees can't excavate their own holes, and their natural nest sites--woodpecker holes, hollow tips of broken tree branches and tiny tunnels made by wood-boring beetles, for example--are not exactly abundant.
Hang your bee houses in a sheltered place, at least three feet off the ground, with the holes facing south or east to catch the morning sun.

Killer bee risks all buzz : African :   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
SANTA CLARITA -- If a bee is buzzing in this valley, the likelihood is that it's the infamous Africanized "killer" that caused such a stir in the 1990s when experts warned that a dangerous new breed of honeybee was migrating to the Southwest.
As it turns out, the killer bees have proved to be more annoying than lethal, according to experts and local exterminator Gary Fisher, who says the Africanized honeybees are more aggressive than their native predecessor, the European honeybee, but are not deadly.
Africanized bees were intentionally bred in the 1950s in South America from imported sub-Saharan African bees that are known to be more aggressive, and more productive, than the honeybees native to America.

He deduced that the sound came from the 4 1/2‑6 day old nurse bees and was due, not to individual bees warbling, but to the combined effect of many individual different frequencies.

Multiple Sclerosis - The Buzz About Bee Venom Therapy for MS
Bees are creatures that people usually work fairly hard to avoid.
But many people with multiple sclerosis (MS) have taken an interest in bee venom, and some even arrange to be stung in an effort to treat their symptoms.
Since we felt that this practice entailed a real risk of possible allergic reactions, some of which could be fatal, as well as the emotional and economic burdens of chasing false hopes, we felt properly conducted studies of safety and efficacy were needed.
