Common Buzzard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Buzzards are the largest bird of prey to be found in most of England.
Buzzards do not normally form flocks, but several may be seen together on migration or in good habitat.
The term "buzzard" only applies to birds of prey when intended as a derogatory epithet, specifically for raptors that are considered pests, such as the Red-tailed Hawks and Peregrine Falcons.

 Common Buzzard, Buteo buteo
The buzzard, although not a native of the Eastern Counties, is apt to appear in both Lincolnshire and Norfolk from time to time.
Yet, the buzzard does not exist in such numbers for it to be a constant danger to the game preserves, and quite rightly it has been placed upon the list of protected birds.
The buzzard will also feed on carrion, a fact that often brings the blame on to it for a killing for which it was not responsible.

In the US, the term "buzzard" is never used to refer to birds of prey, like hawks, eagles, falcons, and owls, outside of this context.
Rarely, a derogatory term for any large bird that happens to be a scavenger, such as a raven or albatross (in other words, any large bird that is neither predatory nor flightless).

A buzzard spends long periods soaring, holding its straight wings motionless, with the tips of the primary feathers curved upwards and the tail spread out.
In the 19th century, buzzards were shot in large numbers by gamekeepers and by the early 1900s they had disappeared from many parts of Britain.
Since the rabbit is the buzzard's favourite food, many birds went hungry and the numbers began to decline yet again.

To them the turkey buzzard when seen flying and soaring in the bright blue sky and when met on the ground eating carrion served as a constant way to recall important doctrines in their culture.
